The communication infrastructure consists of links, network devices, software, and personnel who run and take care it.

the links that connect the network devices,

the software tells the devices what to do, and the people who takes care of it.

Once you are connected, you are part of the Internet.

TCP/IP

a protocol defines the rules that all devices, including your computers, must follow to communicate with each other.

You want to connect to the Internet, your computer must use TCP/IP protocol as the communication protocol.

A software in your computer uses TCP/IP to connect to a server at www.myspace.com, and make a Web request

using the TCP/IP to send you the web documents, including all the exciting pictures of your friends you requested

They are happily married to each other

Really, TCP and IP (and others) working together

TCP takes care of the communication between a piece of software running in your computer, and another running on the server, like one at www.facebook.com.

TCP uses special addresses called port numbers to associate the communicating software.

TCP helps your browser or email software to send data, by breaking the data into small pieces for the IP to handle

TCP assembles the pieces or packets when they arrive your computer

TCP ensures nothing is missing….Otherwise, you will see your friends

without hands, ears, or noses on myspace.com, or not at all

IP takes care of communication between the computer you are on and the computer you are requesting information from.
