• Recent studies have shown that an applicant's resume gets 7 seconds before it is judged (good or bad) by a potential employer. "I don't have time to read through each resume and search for the important points. They need to jump out at me," says Mike Earley, vice president of resource management at MyWire, a media aggregation site.

• Consistent font and format

• Summary of skills, but not too many acronyms

• Font no smaller than 10 point, probably 12

• Either include links to previous company websites or a brief description of each company

• Make the resume interesting to read like a front page newspaper

20

• Personal picture

• Boxes and color

• Personal pronouns

• Personal information (marital status, family members, church membership)

• Typos, misspellings and verbal irregularity

• No phone number included

Your Professional Summary

The purpose of the Professional Summary is to summarize your experience and highlight dimensions of your background

Resume readers look for specific work and industry experience and positions you've held to weave together a story about you

Front page newspaper article

Skip over-used phrases like hard working, ethical, 20 years experience

Use Elevator Pitch, concise, to-the-point, hit hard

Many of us underestimate our achievements. We're often told not to boast, that modesty is the best policy. Employers look for achievers, candidates who go above and beyond their job duties. Your resume allows you to describe your best accomplishments so employers want to take a chance on you. If you think you have no career accomplishments, think again. Everybody has them; it's just a matter of digging down and pinpointing what they are.

What Is an Accomplishment? On your resume, an accomplishment is an example of how you contributed to your employer, or it's an achievement that reflects the kind of worker you are.

Did you win any awards or receive some type of recognitionList things your boss may disagree with (this is not a job description or perf review)Convert words to power words http://www.bc.edu/offices/careers/skills/resumes/verbs.html

Examples: Quantify, Quantify, Quantify…..and HIT HARDA welder relays her dedication to quality: “Achieved a record of zero defects in all pipe-welding and ductwork jobs.”

An engineer shows how he contributed to the bottom line: “Drove $1.2 million revenue increase by deploying 200-plus software suites for company's leading product line.”
