Essential QuestionWhy is the United States fighting in

Afghanistan?!

Afghanistan• Afghanistan was led by a monarchy for a very

long time.• The nation was led by strong Islamic

traditions.• After a severe drought, the Shah, or the ruler

of Afghanistan was overthrown in a coup détente because of the extreme poverty Afghanistan was facing.

New Leadership• Mohammed Sardar Daoud Khan led the coup

détente in 1973• He declared himself the Prime Minister of

Afghanistan• He made several attempts to reform the poor

economic conditions of Afghanistan, but had little success.

Changes from the Soviet Union

• Khan had strong ties to the Soviet Union, a communist nation

• Soon, the government began forbidding the practice of Islam in Afghanistan and promoted atheism instead.

• Men had to cut their beards• Women were not allowed to wear a chador, or

the Islamic coverings• Mosques became off limits• Women were given equal rights and provided

with an education.• Why would the Afghani people be so upset about these

changes?

• Over two million Afghani people were killed by the Soviet Union and the new Afghani government.

• But on the outskirts of the country, a revolution was developing…

The Taliban Takeover• Islamic extremists, known as the Taliban,

began to take over Afghanistan and eventually pushed the Soviet Union out in 1992.

• Afghanistan became an Islamic state once more.

• Poor and war torn, Pakistan and terrorist groups, such as Al Qaeda funded the Taliban takeover of Afghanistan.

• Afghani citizens were once more allowed to practice Islam, but the rulers were militant, meaning that they would perform gruesome attacks to those who did not follow the Sharia, or the Islamic code.

• Do you think it makes sense that a militant, Islamic group took over Afghanistan? Why or why not?

The Taliban Takeover

• Education was nearly banned, and the only schools funded by the Taliban were those who educated young boys to be jihadist, or suicide bombers.– Why would the Taliban ban public education? – Why would the Taliban support jihadist education?

• Jihadist School

• Women were stripped of all their rights:– Women could not work outside their homes or go to school…they

couldn’t even be seen on their balconies/porches and windows were painted over so that they could not been seen inside the home

– Women had to wear burqas which cover their bodies entirely, or they could be beaten

– Women could not speak in public, or even wear high heels so they wouldn’t make a sound while walking

– Women could not be photographed or appear on tv…or play any sports or go to any celebrations

– Women could not wear pants or make up or bright colors– And that just names a few of the laws…

• Put yourselves in the shoes of an Afghani woman…what would it be like to live under the Taliban rule? Would you have any sense of worth? Would you be angry? Would you know that there was life outside of what you were experiencing?

Rebuilding Afghanistan• Clearly, life under the Taliban was oppressive and

scary…so how did the world respond?• European countries, Canada and India all helped

to modernize Afghanistan and rebuild the war-torn country

• The United States army has helped to train the Afghani military to fight against the oppression of the Taliban

• Do you think this is a good thing? What affect could Western involvement have on this country?
