Paul Arteel, Executive Director,GAMIAN-Europe
Belgian Brain Ambassadors Day - 17/03/2015
10 jaar Belgian Brain Council

RECOMMENDATIONS Give high priority to brain research Increase public funding for fundamental research Conduct initiatives to raise public awareness Foster greater inter-disciplinary knowledge to improve thinking
about norms & Encourage a more interdisciplinary approach Establish a central, government run database & « information
centre » for brain research Simplify the testing and market introduction process for new
treatments Guarantee equal access to treatment as a self-evident
precondition for choice
How could we do better ?
• more ideas
• more researchers (in & out)
• more means
• more collaboration
• more therapeutic progress
• more patients empowerment
Belgian Brain Council = neuroscientists+patients+industry
• Increasingly difficult to make scientific discoveries • More people required to find new things • Research increasingly done in teams, for virtually all fields • Teams typically produce more highly cited research than individuals
Teams that are more diverse are even more highly impactful Teams are more likely than solo authors to insert novel
combinations of science into familiar knowledge domainsMore team science is done inter-institutionally But, dispersed teams have a high rate of failure
• Scientists who do not collaborate are less productive
More collaboration: the evidence
