What is the purpose of LAYERS? By default, when you paint with one color
and it overlaps another color, the original pixels are replaced.
Layers keep pieces of an image separate so that you can easily make changes to the art.

How do I work with LAYERS? You can add a new
layer by clicking on the tab located at the bottom of the layers palette.
You can also delete a layer by dragging the layer into the trash can located at the bottom of the layers palette.

How can I organize my layers? A layer group allows you to organize your
layers on your layer palette. A layer group will contain individual layers.

How can I organize my layers? You can also Lock a
layer by clicking on the ‘Lock All’ button at the top of the Layers Palette. This will allow you to work on other layers without affecting the locked layer. Locked layers are still visible. Lock All
What is TRANSPARENCY?
Photoshop displays a checkerboard pattern to indicate there are no pixels in that area.
The underneath layer will show through. CHECKBOARD
What is a FLATTENED image?
By default, files have one layer only that has no transparency.
Photoshop always names this as BACKGROUND, in italics.
NOT TRANSPARENT
More about layers:
COPY & PASTE will automatically create a new layer for you.
Remember to name your layers by double clicking on the layer name.
Layers can be rearranged by dragging their positions in the palette. Top layers cover bottom layers.
Layers files must be saved as .PSD
