ArtAppreciation.AfterameetingtolaunchitattheBeehivecaféGwen,arecentmember,hasofferedtoleadthegroup.FirstmeetingwillbeattheBeehiveon3rdOctoberat10amwherethescopeofthisfascinatingsubjectcanbeworkedout.

NewsthatMichellewhorunstheBeehivewillberetiringonthe14thDecember2019hasbeenreceived.WewishherallthebestfromBolsoverU3Aandforallowingusregularusetheupstairsroom.ManyoftheU3Aerswillcertainlymissherandherlovelycakes. SheplanstosellupasagoingconcernsowatchoutforupdatesforyourgroupsusingtheBeehiveasalternativetemporaryarrangementsmayneedtobeputinplace,justincase.Moredetailswhenconfirmedwillbesentout.

Septembers'meetingatHillstown,agreatsuccess. Well,IforoneenjoyedourfirstmeetingatHillstown.ItwasnicetoparknearbyandwhenIlooked,thecarparkwasalmostfull,sogoodnessonlyknowswhereyouallparkedwhenattheAssemblyHall.Thehallitselfwasnice,brightandhomely.WhowouldhaveguessedtherewassomuchtoTigers?Ithoughtifyousawoneyouhadseenthemall.Itjustgoestoshowweallstillhavemuchtolearnabouttheworldinwhichwelive.AgoodbyewasmadetoSandieandDerekwhoaremovingfromBolsover. TheyhavebothserveduswellonCommitteeandasGroupleaders.WewishthemwellandweareassuredtheywilljoinaU3Aintheirnewarea.

Theonenegativethingthatwascommentedonaboutthenewvenuewastheacoustics,withallthehardsurfacesitsoonbecameverynoisy.PersonallyIcouldhearthespeaker,butthedindidgetonyournerveswhenwewereallchatting.Iknowthiscanbeaproblemforpeoplewithhearingdifficultiesalthoughthiswasnotevidentwhenthehallwasempty!ThematterhasbeenraisedwiththeCommitteeandhopefullysomesounddampeningcanbeimplementedtominimizetheproblem.

ArtAppreciationgatheredonthe3rdofOctoberatBeehiveCafewithGwentheGroupleadernotingourideastoformatthenextfewmonthsahead.LuckilyPamfromACTgroupattendedandinformedusofthePomegranateTheatre,Film/DocumentaryonLeonardo’s(DaVinci)FullStory.Friday1stNovemberPomegranate,2pm,£11.40forthoseinterested.AnumberofthisgrouphavedecidedtogoandafollowuponDaVinciatthenextgroupmeeting.ThenextmeetingwillbeatBeehiveCafé7thNovemberat10.30am.Seewebsiteforfulldetails.

FromOctober1stLawnBowlsGrouparemeetingindoorsfrom10am-12middayWeeklyeveryTuesdayattheAssemblyHall,HillTop.Thereisacostof£2foruseofHallandequipment.ThisisincollaborationwithHillstownBowlingClubwhoareteachingushowtodoit.RegularU3A'ersareattendingsopleasejustturnup.

ThiswasourfirsttripwiththeU3AgroupthatorganisestripstoNationalTrustproperties. WeboardedthebusatMarketPlaceBolsoverforourvisittoQuarryBank,arestoredcottonmillbuiltin1789. Ourcoachwasnicewithfriendlydriverwhohadtakenthegroupbefore.Seatswerecomfy(spellcheckerjustkickedindoImeancomfrey,nonotreally)althoughahamsaladsandwichcametomindinthebag,was9.30tooearly!

OnarrivalweweregreetedbyaNationalTrustvisitorassistantwithmap,accessbadgeandtimestovisitaplannedtalkatahousewherechildworkerswerelodgedduringtheirapprenticeship.Amemoonmymobile‘Mustfindchimneysweep’forwoodburnerbackhome.

Agreatwealthofinterestingfactsfilledtheday. ThecontributiontotheindustrialgrowthoftheUnitedKingdomtheplaceprovidedwasavitalpartofmyhistoricaljigsaw. AnumberofourU3AHistorygroupalsocameonthistrip.Theaddedbonus-afewmorefactsontapandarefundonthedepositpaidforthecoach,asmorebumsonseats.
