Units Discussed This Year:

Physical Science – Forces and Motion

Life Science – Biodiversity and Interdependence

Earth Science – Plate Tectonics

Portfolio• It is important for your child to keep an organized and up to

date science portfolio (binder).• I will monitor their organization and will keep a model

portfolio as we complete activities.• There will be a portfolio check at the end of every unit.• The portfolio grade includes graphs that are handed in, lab

summaries, completed lab activities, and the portfolio check.

• Students will be informed when lab material will be handed in and graded.

Writing and Reading in Science• I am a big advocate for writing

and reading in science.• Students have the opportunity

to read science articles for extra credit.

• We will write a lab summary after almost every lab.

• They will read a passage from the text after almost every lab.

Extra Help:• I coach volleyball at the

high school so I will be unavailable for extra help past 3 PM until mid November.

• I am ALWAYS here in the morning and get here around 7 AM.

• Please do not hesitate to send your child in to see me. I am here to help.

Grading Scale:

30% - Test & Project

30% - Quizzes (At least 3)

30% - Lab Portfolio (Lab work like graphs, summaries, observations, and the entire portfolio check)

10% - Homework

Homework Policy• Homework, when given, is usually due the

next day. If you hand in completed work on time, you will receive 10 points. If you do not have your homework, then you will have 24 hours to hand it in for half credit (5 points).

Make Up Work:• Will be available by day in folders• BUT most, if not all, work requires a lab that

needs to be completed so you need to schedule a day and time to come in. (Calendar to sign up)

• If the work does not require a lab, please come see me anyway so that I can discuss what I would like you to do.

Extra Credit:• Extension Activities +2• Science Reading with 5 sentence (paragraph)

summary +2• Good Link or App to go with what we are

discussing +1– Extra Credit will be added to quizzes during the

marking period, but will not be added to the common assessment at the end of the marking period.
