2017-2018 COMMUNITY The independent city of Charlottesville, Virginia (population 48,210) is located in the foothills of the Blue Ridge Mountains, along the Rivanna River, 115 miles southwest of Washington, D.C. Its scenic location, history, and the presence of the University of Virginia make this a diverse community, rich in culture and opportunity. The local government is very invested in education and strongly advocates for a world class education for all of our students. The 2016-2017 per pupil expenditure of $16,840 was among the highest in Virginia.
SCHOOLS The Charlottesville City School Division is comprised of one preschool, six elementary schools (K-4), one upper-elementary school (5-6), one middle school (7-8), one high school (9-12), one alternative school (9-12) and one vocational/technical school, which is jointly operated with Albemarle County Schools. There are over 4,200 students in the Charlottesville City Schools, over 1,200 of whom attend Charlottesville High School, which is fully accredited by the Virginia Department of Education. Student bodies tend to be reflections of their communities, and Charlottesville, as an important host for the International Rescue Committee, is profoundly diverse. More than forty countries from around the globe are represented in our halls. Forty-one percent of our students are Caucasian, thirty-four percent are African-American, twelve percent are Hispanic or Latino, six percent are Asian or Pacific Islander, and other races make up the final six percent.
PROGRAM A faculty of just over 100 certified teachers offers a comprehensive curriculum which stresses academics, but includes ample opportunity for students to participate in the study of the visual and performing arts, vocational, and technical fields. Class sizes are small, offering students many opportunities to participate and develop leadership skills. Students are encouraged to take part in a variety of co-curricular activities designed to supplement the core curriculum. Students are each issued personal Chromebooks for work on assignments at school and at home. Students select their programs from academic courses which are differentiated by level. The mathematics, science, social science, and English departments offer academic, unleveled, honors, dual enrollment and Advanced Placement courses. The world language program offers Chinese, French, German, Latin, and Spanish from the academic to the Advanced Placement level. In addition, students may elect to participate in one or more of the fine arts programs including vocal and instrumental music, visual arts, theatre arts, photography, and creative writing courses. Students interested in the practical or applied arts may select courses which include automotive trades, building trades, computer science, cosmetology, culinary arts, marketing, technology, hospitality, health and medical sciences, and work-based learning experiences. Students may also enroll in college courses through Piedmont Virginia Community College and the University of Virginia.
CLUBS AND ACTIVITIES More than 65 percent of Charlottesville High School students participate in extra-curricular activities, choosing from among 55 Virginia High School League (VHSL) sanctioned ninth grade, junior varsity, and varsity athletic programs and more than 40 clubs and activities. The boys’ and girls’ sports programs are highly respected and enjoy a reputation for excellence. The band, chorus, orchestra, theatre, and visual arts programs are recognized throughout the Commonwealth of Virginia and have earned the designation “Blue Ribbon School” from the Virginia Music Educators Association. The orchestra traveled to Ireland and performed to great acclaim last summer. The always strong boys’ varsity soccer team finished the 2017 season as state runners’ up. We have earned national recognition in Scholastic Bowl and our BACON (Best All-around Club of Nerds) club recently finished 2nd in the world in a robotics competition.
