Take a Bow! LNA Member - Design Landscapes
In recognition of their charitable contribution to Youngcare, the LNA are naming Design Landscapes the “Take a Bow” recipient for the month of March.
Design Landscapes gives charity a helping hand
The Sydney office of Design Landscapes led by example in January, supporting national charity Youngcare to stage an
event in the CBD. Youngcare were planning a media launch for their 2013 Simpson Desert Challenge and hoped to bring a slice of the desert to Wynyard Park by building a temporary sand pit and trucking in camels.
Design Landscapes Director Michael Platt took up the challenge to build the sand pit and in doing so set the stage for an amazing media launch. The team arrived at 5:30am in the CBD and set about creating a 3 metre by 7 metre pit as light broke. By 7:30am the media launch was in full swing, attracting interest from four television outlets and various print outlets.
Youngcare CEO Mark Foley expressed his deep gratitude for the support of Design Landscapes for the donation of all the materials and labour for the sand pit. Mr Foley said it was only through generous support from businesses like Design Landscapes that Youngcare will achieve its mission to get young people with high care needs out of aged care and into age appropriate housing.
For more information about Youngcare’s work visit

The LNA would like take this opportunity to congratulate Design Landscapes.

TAFE NSW Landscape Construction apprentices to battle it out at the 2013 Sydney Royal Easter Show
More than a 100 up and coming TAFE NSW Landscape Construction apprentices will be out to impress the public at the 2013 Sydney Royal Easter Show this year.
The 2013 TAFE NSW Landscaping Challenge will be the centrepiece of the Great Aussie Backyard – a wide mix of great gardening ideas, exhibitors and leading gardening experts.
Following this year’s theme “Small Spaces Big Ideas”, the four competing teams will be made up of students enrolled at each of the four participating TAFE NSW Institutes.
• IllawarraInstitute–YallahCollege
• NorthernSydneyInstitute-RydeCollege
• SouthWesternSydneyInstitute–PadstowCollege
• WesternSydneyInstitute–RichmondCollege
With no compulsory garden requirements that teams have had in previous years challenges, this year’s event will have the teams using their creative imagination, design and construction skills to come up with some unique gardens to meet the theme of “Small Spaces Big Ideas”.
The Royal Agricultural Society (RAS) of NSW is excited to host this challenge, which not only provides ideas for the public on how they can create their very own courtyard gardens, but also provides a valuable educational opportunity for the TAFE NSW Landscaping students.
This opportunity for the students will encompass working onsite during the build and bump‐in of the largest annual event in the Southern Hemisphere. It also provides the students with a unique insight into the challenges that professional landscapers face when working on large projects to tight deadlines.
Design, teamwork, networking with industry, problem solving and project management are just some of the key skills that the students will take away from this years challenge.
The garden displays will be constructed pre‐show and then judged by a panel of experts, including TV gardening personality Jody Rigby, on opening day of the show Thursday 21 March 2013.
Some of the aspects that the judges will be marking on are; Design, workmanship, construction complexity, construction materials, Green Skills, innovation and planting.
There will also be a “People’s Choice Award” providing the opportunity for the public to vote for their favourite garden prior to its announcement on Friday 29 March 2013.

Australian cities fall well below international standards
Winner of 1300apprentice’s, 2012’s 2nd year Horticulture apprentice of the year- Jesse Novotny!
While international Green Cities Guidelines say that residents in urban environments should be no more than 6 minutes from their nearest neighbourhood park, a new survey shows that around half of urban Australians do not have access this close.
“Only 45% are within a five minute walk and 77% of residents in our major cities are within a 10 minute walk of their favourite green space. But it is worrying that the others do not have reasonable access- and that more than five percent reported that they do not
have green space to walk to at all,” the CEO of Nursery & Garden Industry Australia (NGIA), Mr Robert Prince said.
“On Saturday 2nd March we celebrate our third annual ‘Improve Your Plant/Life Balance Day’ and call on our governments, local, state and federal to give greater recognition for more green space in our urban environments.
“At present across Australia, new housing estates need only provide five percent public green space – internationally the figure now being considered appropriate is 25%. We should be at least doubling the minimum requirements in Australia,” Mr Prince said.
In a Newspoll conducted at the end of 2012 the nursery and garden industry gauged the use and accessibility of green space among residents of Sydney, Melbourne, Brisbane, Adelaide and Perth.
“The health benefits of green space are well-documented, so it should be of concern to the community that Australians could be missing out due to a lack of nearby green space or access to it,” Mr Prince added.
The use of green space relative to its proximity to residents is confirmed in the research which shows that 63% of Australians within a five minute walk use the green space at least weekly compared with only 36% of those 11-20 minutes’ walk away.
The key benefits of visiting green space were similar across the cities: 72% said relaxation and taking time out; 68% said improving the quality of life; 67% said to enjoy the beauty of the surroundings; and 64% said for exercise and keeping fit.
“On ‘Improve Your Plant/Life Balance Day’ it is reassuring that a significant majority in the community recognise the value of the trees and parks around them to their health and wellbeing. Councils and developers should take note of the results in planning for future neighbourhoods and redeveloping existing ones,” Mr Prince said.

February 2013, marks 30 years of service for Andreasens Green, Chief Operations Officer - Darren Mason.
Darren started his career in the Landscape industry as an Apprentice Gardener in Local Government before applying for a position as Assistant Manager at Andreasens Wholesale Nursery advertised in his local paper, way back in 1983. He was successful in
gaining the position and has been with Andreasens Green ever since.
Darren has gained a thorough understanding of the business because he has literally worked at every level within the business. “My current role is Chief Operations Officer, I’ve had some fantastic opportunities along the way…..it’s been a great ride so far”
Andreasens Green was established in 1981, on a 5 acre site at Lansvale in Sydney’s Southwest. Today the business has grown to 150 acres Production nursery, with growing sites across NSW and QLD. Andreasens has cemented itself as a major supplier to the nursery and landscapes industry. “We are proud to have been involved in a wide range of iconic projects that have helped to “Green” Australia. We’re currently supplying the plant material for One Central Park and growing stock for Barangaroo Headland Park.
In 2011, Andreasens Green celebrated 30 years in business. Darren attributes the success of Andreasens Green to its people, The Green Team. “It’s our team who make our business successful. There are a number of long time employees who have contributed a good part of their working life to the business. We have built great relationships with our clients over the years and are renowned for our persistence and adaptable attitudes whilst having fun along the way”.

Q & A of the MonthMarch 2013
NGIA Call for Profile Projects
The LNA are calling on all full member contractors offering design services to contribute the design only component of a landscape package which has been pledged to one of the LNA’s chosen charities. The Boystown - San Miguel Family Centre’s annual event Celebrate the West will be held next Friday 22 March 2013 at which the Landscape package will be auctioned to raise much needed funds.
The LNA would like to take the opportunity again to thank our 2012 contributors, Alpine Nurseries and Rolling Stones Landscapes who generously gave of their time and materials. Any member that is in a position to lend a hand can contact Joanne Aquilina directly on (0407) 799 449.
Do I need to pay my employee for Wet Weather?
• UndertheGardenersandLandscapeServicesAwardthere is no provision for inclement (wet/bad) weather and therefore would need to be paid if it is raining. Although casual employees under this award are only paid for the hours you require them to work and therefore would not be entitled to be paid in the event there is no work due to rain.
• UndertheBuilding&ConstructionAwardthereisaprovision for an inclement (wet/bad) weather payment to be capped at 32hour/fn for full time employees. Part time employees too are capped and their capped amount is worked out as follows: ordinary hours per fortnight divided by 152 then x 32 = pro rata capped entitlement
HOWEVER…
If they are paid under the Building & Construction Award and there is also a contract in place between the employee and employer, then this may alter the outcome depending on the stipulations of the employment agreement.
For Example:
An exert of an employment agreement may say;
“John Smith is employed on a full time basis 38hrs per week by Simpletownscapes.”
This would mean that you may then be bound to that employment agreement, being that regardless of the weather, you employ this person for the specified hours and they must be paid accordingly, even if the wet weather conditions are above and beyond that of the 32hrs/fn stipulated in the Award.
Can employees be made to take their RDO in the event of rain?
Employees cannot be forced to take an RDO or annual because of bad weather.
Can alternative work be given during wet weather?
Yes, you can arrange for alternative work for your employees during wet weather.

Green Expo Sydney has had a ‘makeover’ which is reflected in the snazzy new logos seen here. We’ve missed a year due to change of season positioning and now are gearing up for a massive GES in May 2013.
YES – GES is on again next autumn at Rosehill Gardens 22 and 23 May. You might think it’s a long way off – it’s not and if you are serious about participating, now is the time to start planning. Remember that GES is for ALL of the industry and we welcome participation from every green sector business be it landscape, allied, grower, media and retail.
The most important part of GES is the Fusion Showcase, which has also been improved as it really is a key focus of the Expo. Fusion is where attendees see Plants, Products and Concepts that are NEW to the 12 months prior to May 2013. It is THE place to position your product for maximum exposure and resulting benefits. Fusion Showcase is where visitors look for inspiration, innovation and interest.
So…if you have a new product to showcase to industry and the media, give us a call here at the Nursery & Garden Industry, NSW & ACT (NGINA) and we’ll get the ball rolling!
