Annual Report 2018 1
As I take a moment to reflect upon this past year at the New Hampshire Boat Museum the theme that stands out is progress. Progress on many
fronts: with our facilities, within the Board of Trustees, with our exhibits and programs, and with our capital campaign.
We made the bold decision last year to repair our existing building, and with the help of some generous donors, we were able to realize this significant project. When we opened our doors in late June, we welcomed visitors into a dry building with a revitalized exhibition hall and children’s activities center. Now the building is preserved and ready for the next steps towards its future iteration as a boat building workshop center.
While the roof was being replaced and interior renovations took place, staff and volunteers took NHBM on the road, having a presence at several events in different communities – as far south as Tavares, Florida at the ACBS Sunnyland Boat Show, exposing a wider audience to the New Hampshire Boat Museum. We made new friends and members.
The Millie B had one the best seasons yet due to a dedicated and energetic staff. At the Museum, a few new seasonal staff members joined the Admission Desk team and a college intern joined us for the summer focused on the Museum’s collections, further organizing and inventorying.
Our featured 2019 exhibit was “Racing on the Waterways of New Hampshire” with small featurettes on the stage of our outboard motor collection, vintage Penn Yan boats and of course the boat workshop. Our racing exhibit paired nicely with the Vintage Race Boat Regatta that capped off the season in September. It also spurred a new partnership with the South Shore Outboard Association who generously loaned five beautifully restored small outboard hydroplane race
boats, plus they came and gave a fun, interesting presentation on the sport. Boat Building and Model Yacht Kit Building classes were once again a hit with participants, garnering new volunteers and ambassadors of the programs. The youth boat building class had some of the most artistically creative students in 2019 than in years past, who spent extra time carving nautical figurines for their canoes. We again were able to give a number of scholarships to boat building students thanks to our generous donors. A couple of kit boats were donated to the Model Yacht Kit building class as scholarship opportunities, too, and the Wooden Boat Graduate School Scholarship was awarded to another qualifying student to attend the Wooden Boat School in Maine.
Subject to the vagaries of the impacts of COVID-19, our planning for 2020 is done and we’re excited to tell local stories and continue to celebrate the freshwater traditions in our New Hampshire communities. New for this year will be our Lecture and ARTS series where we will have talks and works of art on exhibit from two local artists featured over the summer. We’re planning for another successful boat building and model kit building programs that promote our boating heritage, plus teaching community sailing in Wolfeboro, our off-shoot sailing class at Bald Peak Colony, our sailboat sharing program and special Penobscot Bay sailing trip. Great progress is being made on all fronts - from last year through to this year’s plans.
As we face down the COVID-19 pandemic, our calendar may shuffle around some, but we thank you for your patience and support. We are all in this together. We look forward to opening our doors when it is safe to do so. Thank you!

Dear Friends,
You may have heard that there has been a big change in the leadership of the Museum over the past year! Not to worry, Martha Cummings, our very able Executive Director, is working as hard as ever in the same capacity. We are talking about the Board of Trustees and how the two of us, with great support from the Board and Martha, have split the job of Board Chair in two: Kerry Lynch serving as the internally focused Co-Chair, and Jaime Laurent taking on the job of external Co-Chair. What this means at a high level is that Kerry will focus on the operations and finances of the Museum, and Jaime will guide fundraising, events, and programs. The Board strongly believes that at this juncture in the Museum’s lifecycle, having two people share the helm is advantageous for a number of reasons. And the news gets better: Kristin Isley who served as Interim Board Chair in 2019, will serve as Vice-Chair in 2020.
Jaime and Kerry could not be more different, nor could they be more complementary. Jaime is a people person, has done fundraising successfully for many years, and knows how to organize and run great events. Kerry, on the other hand, is a detail guy who has run large operations and handled risk management, business planning, and finance. Both of us
bring career-long experience and have the most important thing in common – a passion for the water, boating, and the New Hampshire Boat Museum.
The Board itself has also changed in significant ways. In a natural, healthy evolution we have had several Board members retire at the end of their terms, and new people have volunteered to replace retiring Board members. We have also changed our traditionally informal approach to one of more rigor and accountability. For example, a new governance committee is hard at work ensuring that we have the proper foundation in place for a non-profit of our current and future size. In addition, formal strategic and business plans are being updated.
Both of us also share a common vision for NHBM to be the preeminent freshwater cultural center in New England. NHBM is so much more than antique boats and we strongly believe that we have to remain relevant in this rapidly changing society we live in. That is not to say we won’t continue the wonderful traditions that the Museum has worked so hard at establishing. But it does mean that we can’t rest on our laurels. We feel an obligation to ensure NHBM’s sustainability now as well as position it to embrace the future.

Your generous support to the New Hampshire Boat Museum in 2019 went towards making a much more exciting visitor experience as well as major improvements to our collections storage capabilities. We opened our doors a bit later than usual on June 29, 2019 because our staff and volunteers were working diligently putting together a fun and interesting exhibit on race boats. They were also creating a bright and welcoming family-friendly space in the Museum. Our first visitors of the season included two elementary-school-aged children who walked into the exhibit hall and made a beeline for the brand new Family Activities Area!
Our collections storage saw a concerted effort from staff, volunteers, and our summer intern to re-organize and update the collections database. With improved collections procedures and storage systems, we have made huge strides in the tracking of our important artifacts for future generations.
Thanks to your support, our sailing volunteers were able to make some necessary improvements
to NHBM’s sailboats, ensuring sailing students’ had a great experience learning to sail. Our Lake Discovery Camp, though a small group this year, had another week of science, ecology, boating safety, model yachting, time with the Watershed Warriors, Marine Patrol, and adventurous trips on Molly the Trolley and the Millie B to the Libby Museum. We welcomed the public to the Museum for three free lectures over the summer and hosted a number of small group tours.
Prior to the start of our season, staff and volunteers spread the word about NHBM while supporting fellow museums, vintage boating groups, or freshwater conservation organizations through our attendance at their events. We ended the season by thanking our volunteers at our end-of-the-year picnic. Thank YOU for making it possible to keep the New Hampshire Boat Museum running in top gear and being an impactful and fun community resource.
