This was a presentation I conceptualized, created, and presented to the CT AARP leadership about why they should join CT’s healthcare4every1 campaign.
Ultimately they did so, and put substantial organizational resources into pushing the Governor to sign CT’s public health insurance option.

Health care
Most important
Most/secondmost important
Specifically, people are worried about:
Rising premiums & co-pays
Losing their health insurance
Quality of health care
Nearly 2/3 of voters favor providing access to affordable, quality health care for all Americans….
even if it means
“a major role for the federal government”
or
“a tax increase”
“Do you favor or oppose providing access to affordable, quality health care for all Americans……”
the economic crisis hasn’t suppressed
that feeling….
and may have even and may have even strengthened itstrengthened it
The economic crisis presents
opportunities for us

When the crisis is big enough,
we figure out how to deal with
it
The debate over government’s role
in the economy and in protecting people
from economic forces and greedis over
The question now is
howis the government
involved and
whatdoes it do?
the people who profitprofit off the system are also the people running running the system
in both finance and health care:
(At one public managed-care company), their medical loss ratio went from 78.5 to 79 - their stock dropped ten percent in one day. There's been a disconnect:
“I used to be a pluralist, free-market economy - but it is not working in health care the way it should.
David Benfer, CEO and President of St Raphael’s Hospital
These companies were created originally as non-profits around the law of large numbers and true insurance principles.
Now that has changed to the law of profit and dividend.”

The economy- nationally &
internationally-will be a huge and
lingering issue at the federal level
health care can and needs to be addressed
at the state level

“States are being aggressive experimenters, and those lessons learned are going to be invaluable to us in looking at national health reform.”
Michelle Dimarob, Manager of legislative affairs for the National Federation of Independent Business in“Small Business Is Latest Focus in Health Fight,” July 10, 2008, New York Times

The crisis is not just about how much health care costs
it’s about what we are – or aren’t –
getting for all that money
