What Defines a Person?
Race
• Categorizes humans by heredity, physical characteristics, geographic ancestry
• Examples• White• Black• Asian• Pacific Islander
• It’s what you bubble in on a form• Created around the time of exploration
Race over time
Ethnicity
• A group of people whose members identify with each other through a common heritage often consisting of a common ideology that stresses common ancestry
• Examples:• African American• Kurd• Arab• French
• Not everyone has an ethnicity they identify with, especially in diverse countries
Nationality
• A country of allegiance or national identity• Examples:• American• Chinese• Colombian• French
• This can be the same as your ethnicity• “If there is a war, who would you fight for?”
Religious Group
• A group of people who adhere to the same religious beliefs
• Examples:• Jews• Sikhs • Buddhists• Mormons
• Within world religions there are specific divisions• Some ethnicities have specific religious groups within
them, although some are all one religion• Some religious groups are tribal or very specific
