What does it do and why is it important?

What is Business Intelligence?

It’s all about getting the right information to the right people at the right time to allow owners and managers to make decisions based on fact, not estimates and hunches.

Gartner, regarded by many as one of the world’s leading information technology research companies, defines BI as:…an umbrella term that includes the applications, infrastructure, tools, and best practices that enable access to, and analysis of, information to improve and optimize decisions and performance.

Why is BI important?

A real life BI case study

A large chain of sandwich shops brought in a new snack product that was initially classed as a success – it had good sales and made a high margin.

What they didn’t notice is that many customers were purchasing this cheaper smaller option rather than the core products.

These new items were reducing the stores’ overall profitability.

It was not until the data was presented in Axent that the chain became aware of this issue. They proceeded to remove the snack products from the majority of their outlets.

Sales of the core products increased because they were able to make informed decisions about products based on sales data in their BI software.
