Basic Reiki Information
What is Reiki?
Reiki is a healing modality that originated in Japan in the late 1800′s with Dr. Mikau Usui.
The word “Reiki” is of Japanese origin and refers to the Universal Life Force. The name
originates from the Japanese concepts of REI (spirit) and KI (life force, energy).
Reiki has also been described as the Japanese word for “universal energy” and within
traditional Eastern healing focuses on the “KI” (also known as ”Qi”, “Chi”, or “Prana”) as
a method of bringing the life force energy back into balance.
Everyday stress, environmental toxins, addictions, etc. negatively impact the flow of the
“KI” or life force energy. Reiki healing works to re-balance the subtle energies, which in
turn will increase feelings of well being, reduce stress, and promote good health.
In essence, Reiki is a method of harnessing the Universal Life Force that exists within
us, in the world around us and in all living creatures, and using this energy to heal
ourselves and others. Indeed, since everything is energy and made up of the same
elements, some believe this life force exists in everything, whether we deem it to be
“living” or not.
Reiki energy healing restores harmony to negatively impacted areas of the body by
flowing through these areas in the energy field and charging them with positive energy to
restore harmony.
We are all born with the natural ability to use the universal life force for healing. Reiki is a
wonderful way to cultivate this natural ability.

The Chakras
Chakras are energy centers
located at the main branches
of the nervous system.
These are actual energy
vortices that serve as
collection and transmission
centers for subtle energy and
biophysical energy.
The chakras are circular-
shaped energy bodies that
direct life energy and control
our physical, mental, spiritual
and emotional well-being.

Root Chakra (1st) – In the Groin – Color: Red – Survival, Fertility, Life Force,
Will to Live
Balance the Chakras with Reiki1. Lie down on your back placing one of your hands on your forehead (6th chakra)
and the other over your pubic bone (1st chakra). This will balance the energy
from the head to the lower parts of the body. Let your hands rest in these
positions for approximately 5 minutes. This will cause you to become more in
touch with your sexual energy.
2. Still lying down, move one hand over the throat (5th chakra) and the other hand
to the belly below the navel (2nd chakra). This position brings into balance your
emotions and vitality with your aspects of self-expression and communication.
This will help you to become more connected with your desires and emotions
and be able to be more creative in their expression. Maintain these hand
positions for approximately 5 minutes.
3. Move one hand to the middle of the chest (4th chakra) and the other hand to the
solar plexus (3rd chakra). The heart chakra is connected with love and
compassion and the solar plexus chakra is connected to personal strength and
power. Balancing these centers will enable you to use love and understanding to
make the right decisions.
4. Move one hand to your belly across the navel area at the sacral chakra (2nd
chakra) and place the other hand on your forehead at the third eye chakra (6th
chakra). This position will allow you to let go of your thoughts and feelings and
you will find yourself relaxing very deeply. Keep your hands in this position for 5
minutes.
5. You have now balanced your chakras. Stretch your entire body, wiggle your toes
and fingers, and come back to normal consciousness.

Balance the Chakras with Pendulum & Crystal
Another way to balance the chakras is to use a pendulum and crystal method. The
pendulum is used as a diagnostic tool – to see if the chakras are open and if they are
accepting energy. The basic way this works is for you to simply let your pendulum hand over each of the chakras. This method is easiest to do on another person, and quite difficult to do on yourself.
Watch how your pendulum reacts as you hold it over each chakra. Use the chart on the
next page to see some general guidelines about what the movements of the pendulum
might mean. In general, you’re looking for a clockwise rotation from your pendulum as
you hold it over a chakra. This generally indicates a chakra that is open and accepting
energy.
If you get any other movement, you’ll
employ the crystal or feng shui ball to
encourage the chakra to open. Spin the
crystal ball over the chakra for a minute or
so. Check the chakra again with the
pendulum. It may be necessary to repeat
this process several times for each chakra
before it opens. We don’t know why this
method works; we only know that it does.
Why open the chakras? We believe that
an open chakra will accept the most energy thereby giving the Reiki recipient the
greatest benefit from the Reiki session.

Reiki Self Healing Hand Positions
Using Reiki for self healing is a powerful way to detoxify your body and your energy, as
well as promote well being and health within yourself. Self healing with Reiki is also a
wonderful way to get more accustomed to feeling energy in general – from both
standpoints of sender and receiver. Here is a chart of some self healing hand positions:

Does Reiki Work on Animals?
The answer is “yes!” and they mostly love it. You will find however, that offering Reiki to
an animal can be a completely different experience that offering Reiki to a person. With
animals, you have to let them take the lead.
Some basic steps for offering Reiki to animals:
1. Create a healing space in a quiet area.
2. Mentally invite your animal into the space. If they accept your invitation, they may
or may not come close to you. They may prefer just to be in the space with you.
3. Lay your hands on your pet, but don’t be offended if they walk away. Some
animals prefer “hands off” Reiki. This works just fine. Animals are hundreds of
times more sensitive to energy than people are. They may not need to be
physically touched to benefit from the energy. They may also not want it for very
long.
4. If your animal prefers not to come close to you for hands on Reiki, simple sit with
your palms face up and send Reiki to the animal wherever they have positioned
themselves.
5. The animal Reiki session is over when your pet leaves the healing space.
