Everything Whitefield. Challenges and even more importantly, Solutions. What can we do as residents of Whitefield? (Notice it is Residents and not just Citizens)

transcript

What is Whitefield Rising

It started with a beautiful Old and massive Tree

And the realization that we couldn’t do much to save it from

the axe

So 50 people that heard and resolved to make a difference came together on March 10, 2013

Our Vision

Is Simple

Our Vision isA beautiful Whitefield where • Water is sufficient for our needs• The birds and trees fill our lungs and hearts• The lakes are flourishing with life • The traffic is bearable• The streets are clean enough to walk on• Compassion drives our behaviours towards our

neighbors rich and poor• People feel safe

Howthis is where we get to be kickass different

• We will address and steadily reverse the trend for the top problems for Whitefield Residents ie Water, Garbage, Traffic, Pollution, Stray Dogs, Security, Trees, Lakes, Sustainability and Volunteering

• We will think big, start small and act fast

The mechanicsare simple

• Small Focus Groups are focusing on the top issues. They tap into experts local and global, understand the problem in its entirety. Then they will propose solutions for the short term and long term

Understand the problemKnow the challengesPropose SolutionsLeverage ExpertsUnderstand the Law

Eg: Water• Borewells already sunk deep are running dry• Cauvery water is limited• Population in Whitefield is growing • Whitefield was evacuated due to a drought in the

1960s and the reality of no water quite soon is very real.

So what shall we do?? Vallari and Rajesh are leading a small team of Leaders to tell us just that.

Eg: Garbage• Litter is everywhere and an eyesore• Our landfills cannot take any more non

degradeable garbage. • Water bodies like Lakes are clogged with

everything that’s not good for us. • What should we do as Whitefield Residents that is

low effort for us individually but high value for us all collectively?

• Sangeeta, Deepa, Anjali, Minku, Ambika and others are working with inspired and passionate leaders to find some answers. For instance, did you know that every tetra pack you buy that has a foil lining inside such as Goodlife milk has to go straight to the landfill with no chance of recycling? It is categorized as a reject because it uses “Fused” materials.

Eg: Lake• Varthur Lake as an example is a dead lake• But its main source of pollution is actually

Bellandur Lake! The sewage and effluents flowing into Bellandur are not well handled by the STP along the way and therefore make it into our beautiful Lake.

• In turn, it is affecting us all as its poison seeps into the land around it

Naveen is doggedly pursuing various options and leading us to some answers

Eg: Traffic• Roads are not becoming any bigger• Massive residential complexes are coming up• If you think Kundanahalli junction is a problem

today wait to see how much worse it can get

• What shall we do?• Mr Sampath is facilitating a group of folks, sitting

at the Trafffic Police monthly meetings and steadily working on some options

Eg: Safety• A resident reported deafening construction activity

going on well past midnight.

• The response was 12 calls back to her in the middle of the night asking her to step out for a conversation.

• What if 500 people reported it instead of 1?

Eg: VolunteeringThis is exclusively for those that have want to give back to their communities. Be it an hour a week a month or a year.

What if we put our collective strength behind a few things that will make a difference. Top examples would be1. Education: Civic Sense, Health and Hygiene.2. Creation of Job Opportunities to support the

communities around us.3. Focus on the next generation – the children

Tina Sharma is leading a small group to focus on just this.

Eg: Mobilize Community• How do we get this messsage to you

Whitefielders?• How do we really explain the gravity of our

situation?• How do we get your confidence about our

credibility? • How do we tell you that without your support we

cant be successful?

Veerendra, Anil and Kamal working with Ananthu are worrying about just that.

In Summary50 credible volunteers are serving you

In return we want 10,000 of you to respond to our call for action when we ask

You say, Sure. I am in. What do you want me to do?

We don’t have the answers yet

But a start would be 1)Join “Whitefield Rising” on Facebook. This way we can send you our updates.2)Log into ichangemycity.com and vote for the issues that “Whitefieldrising” will log.
