Women’s Clothing Constricted Their Lives

A Woman’s Place in the 19th CenturyWomen could not have

careers.Had to obey fathers,

husbands, and brothers.Could be beaten if they did

something to anger their father, husband, or brother.

Received less education than males.

Women’s sole purpose was to marry and have children.

All of the women’s possessions belonged to her father or her husband when she married.

a living. Their wealth was inherited.The merchant class could be quite wealthy,

but they were looked down on by the aristocracy because they were “in trade.” They manufactured goods and shipped them around the world for trade.

Small business and shop owners were below the merchants, and were not as wealthy.

Laborers were below the merchants and just made enough to live on.

The poor were usually sent into the streets to beg or were put into poor houses. They often turned to crime to survive.
