Materials Needed• “LostintheFog”bookletreproducible• “LostintheFog”sequencingmat• “LostintheFog”pictureandsentencecards• Scissors• Glue

Preparation Makeacopyofthe“LostintheFog”bookletreproducibleforeachstudent.Followthedirectionstoassembleeachbooklet.

Introduction Giveeachstudentabookletandaskstudentstofollowalongasyoureadthestoryaloud.Explainthatauthorsusewordslike“first,”“next,”“then”and“finally”tohelpreadersfollowtheorderofeventsinastory.Challengestudentstolistenforthesewordsasyoureadaloud.

Procedure1. Readthestoryaloud.

2.Askstudentsiftheynoticedanysequencewordsinthestory.Invitevolunteerstopointoutthesewordsandwheretheywereused.

3.Encouragestudentstocircleorunderlinethesequencewordsintheirbooks.Remindstudentsthateachsequencewordintroducesthenexteventinthestory,sothewordscanhelpthemputtheeventsintherightorder.

Independent Practice 1. Giveeachstudentacopyofthe“LostintheFog”sequencingmat,picturecardsandsentencecards.Havestudentscutapartthecards.

2.Instructstudentstogluethepicturecardsinthecorrectorderacrossthetoprowofthemat.Tellthemtogluethecorrespondingsentencecardbeneatheachpicturecard.(Youmaywanttogooverthepictureandsentencecardswithstudentsbeforetheybegin.)

3.Asstudentsworkindependently,encouragethemtolookbackatthestoryforcluestohelpthemplacethecardsinthecorrectorder.Tellthemtoaskthemselvesquestionslike“Whathappenedfirst?”and“Doesthesentencematchwhatishappeninginthepicture?”

4.Oncestudentshavefinishedsequencing,invitestudentstodiscusstheiranswersandexplainthestrategiestheyusedtochecktheiranswers.
