Where do you go from here?

Is ‘yes’ your answer to any of

the following statements?

Periodontal probing is not consistently performed and is rarely documented.

Low production and profit in the hygiene department.  Greater than 75% of adult patients are CDT

D1110. A low percentage of patients are on periodontal

maintenance (CDT 4910 is seldom used).

Hygienists do not actively support a periodontal program.

Hygienists perform deep scaling at routine prophylaxis visits and patients are not charged for this service.

• Patients with a ‘bloody prophy’ are not being properly educated about their periodontal disease and homecare or treatment planned accordingly – do you have enough time to do this thoroughly?

 • The practice lacks uniform scripts, tools, resources for

patient education regarding periodontal disease. • CDT codes for periodontal disease procedures are used

improperly or not at all. • Risk assessments are rarely, if ever, performed. (Do you

have a periodontal Risk Assessment form?

If you said ‘yes’ to any of the above, then it may be time to reconsider your periodontal standard of care

and implement a periodontal treatment protocol

join with you? How will changing how things are done

impact their job? What is the most motivating thing that

makes you want to change the way you do things?
