Thursday i s the feast or hol y day on the Thursday

before Easte r that commemorates the Last Supper

of Jesus Chr i s t w i th the Apostl es . I t i s p receded by

Hol y Wednesday and fol lowed by Good Fr i day.

On thi s day four events are commemorated: the

washing of the Di sciples ' feet by Jesus Chr i s t , the

ins t i tu t i on of the Mystery of the Holy Euchar i s t at

the Last Supper , the agony of Chr i s t i n the Garden

of Gethsemane, the betrayal of Chr i s t by Judas

I scar iot .

The morning celebrati on of these events marks the

beginning of what i s cal led the Easte r T r iduum or

Sacred T r iduum. The Latin word t r i duum means a

th ree-day per iod, and the t r i duum i n quest i on i s

that of the th ree days f rom the death to the resur -

rect i on of Jesus . I t should be noted that fo r Jesus

and hi s fo l lowers a day ended, and a new day be-

gan, at sunset, not at midni ght, as i t s t i l l does to-

day in the modern Jew i sh calendar .

The Last Supper was held at what present -day

Western c i v i l i zati on considers to be the evening of

Hol y Thursday but what was then considered to be

the f i r s t hours of F r i day. I ts annual commemorati on

thus begins the th ree -day per i od or t r i duum of

Good Fr i day, Holy Saturday and Easte r Sunday,

days of special devot ion that cel ebrate as a s ingle

act i on the death and resur rect ion of Chr i s t , the

central events of Chr i s t i ani ty .
