Various Anatomical Imaging Technologies Computer Assisted Tomography (CAT Scans) Electrocardiograms (EKG) Endoscopy (colonoscopy, proctoscopy, esophagogastroduodenoscopy) Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) Positron Emission Tomography (PET Scans) Ultrasonic Imaging (2D & 3D Ultrasounds)
Research Assignment: Anatomical Imaging Technologies & Applications• Who: Your lab group (3-4 people)• What: Research and present information about the use of different
anatomical imaging technologies, the science behind their function and their ability to diagnose various diseases/anomalies.• How: Using various print and/or electronic resources, research an
assigned anatomical imaging technology and present in Power Point™ or GoogleDocs™ Presentation format with a MINIMUM of 9 slides• When: Research today; write, compile and edit tonight; present
tomorrow (8/23/13)
Required Research Content
• 1) What anatomical features of the body can be studied using this technology? • 2) What diseases, injuries and/or pathologies can be detected with this technology• 3) How long has this technology been available to scientists/physicians? Are there any
specific individuals credited with the invention? • 4) How did scientists and physicians study this region of the body in the past? As such
what are the advantages of this technology over the prior methods? • 5) What are the risks associated with the use of this technology? How does this risk
compare with other potential injuries? • 6) How routine is the use of this technology? What would be the closest location where
one could obtain access to this technology? • 7) What are the general scientific principles behind HOW the technology is able to
obtain data and/or images from the features/areas described in question #1? • 8) Briefly summarize any preparations or specific procedures that the patient or cadaver
must undergo before information can be obtained.
Assessment Criteria
• A) Are all eight (8) of the required content areas addressed? • B) Is there sufficient detail to make the technology understandable to
the average person without overgeneralizing how the technology works and why it is advantageous • C) Do your presentation slides include clear statements, sufficient (but
not excessive text) and relevant, explanatory images? • D) Do you have at least three (3) different sources of information cited
in your presentation?
