Scope and Contents Note
This collection is composed of research files, maps, and papers that were entrusted to Dr. William R. Stanley by Dr. Richard F. Logan and supplemented by material amassed by Dr. Stanley over the course of his career. Dr. William R. Stanley, born 1932, is a distinguished professor emeritus of the Department of Geography of the University of South Carolina. He earned his PhD. in Geography from the University of Pittsburgh in 1966. For the majority of his career he focused on Liberia, but he has worked on major atlas projects in Liberia, Saudi Arabia, and Namibia. Included in the collection is a copy of the Republic of Liberia Planning and Development Atlas, one of the major atlas projects on which Dr. Stanley worked. As he puts it in the preface to his resume, Dr. Stanley “spent 65 years in the
armpits of the world.” He believes it crucial to spend a significant amount of time in a place in order to truly know it. Dr. Richard F. Logan (1914 - 1994) was a professor of Geography at the University of California Los Angeles. He received his PhD from Harvard in 1949 and was the last person to receive a PhD in Geography from that prestigious institution. Dr. Logan spent most of his career mapping and studying Namibia, labeled South West Africa on some maps. He was an Associate Editor for GeoJournal and presented information on Namibia (then South West Africa) to the Sub-Committee on Africa, Foreign Affairs Committee, House of Representatives, U.S. Congress and to the World Court in the Hague, Netherlands. Dr. Stanley and Dr. Logan never met in person. Dr. Logan contacted Dr. Stanley after reading a paper on Namibia by Dr. Stanley in GeoJournal in 1991. The two professors spent the next three years corresponding until Dr. Logan passed away in 1994. Shortly before his death, Dr. Logan asked Dr. Stanley if he would be willing to care for his collection of research. While the vast majority of the materials in the collection are in English, there are also materials in Dutch, German, and Afrikaans. The large maps and the Republic of Liberia Planning and Development Atlas are housed in the map drawers, as they are too large to fit in the boxes that house the rest of the collection.

Series V: Dr. Richard F. Logan Research Materials Dr. Richard F. Logan was an authority on Namibia, previously named South West Africa. Before his death Dr. Logan asked Dr. William Stanley to house his personal research collection. Dr. Logan had separated the material into folders by topic. Logan’s original ordering of topics are reflected in the subseries within this collection. Those papers not grouped into a topical category are listed in the General subseries. For news clippings and articles, capitalization and punctuation of the titles have been carried over from the publication in which the clipping or article appeared. The Kalahari Railroad subseries is comprised of photocopies of news clippings, maps, and reports which were provided to Dr. Logan by Desmond Matthews. Desmond Matthews was the director of Namibia’s Chamber of Mines and an advocate for the development of the railroad. Box 3
