DAY 13 IMPROVING

SENTENCES DAY 1

SEATING CHART: TEAM GLEN

Winning does not require people to be against someone else; people can reach their goals through cooperation just as well as they can through competition. Winning is not always the result of selfish individualism. People achieve happiness by cooperating with others to increase the happiness of all, rather than by winning at others’ expense. Ours is not a world in which the price of one person’s happiness is someone else’s unhappiness.

Assignment: When some people win, must others lose, or are there situations in which everyone wins?

STRATEGY FOR IMPROVING SENTENCES

Skip Directions Don’t Read Answer A. It’s the exact same as

the sentence Common Focuses

1. Run-On Sentences 2. Sentence Fragments3. Misplaced Modifiers4. Passive voice5. Parallelism6. Faulty Coordination/Subordination7. Wordiness

8 STEP PROCESS1. Read the sentence and try to hear the problem.2. If you find an error, eliminate A.3. Before you look at the answer choices, figure

out how to fix the error.4. Find the correction that most closely matches

yours.5. If no correction matches, eliminate answers

that repeat the error or contain new errors.6. If you’re still stumped, reach into your bag of

tricks 7. Plug your answer back into the sentence to

check it.8. If you’re still stumped—cut, guess, and run.

BAG OF DESPERATE TRICKS Go with the shortest answer. Cut answer choices that change the

meaning of the sentence. Cut answer choices that begin with

words ending in -ing. (Should be the noun)

Don’t forget about A.

MODIFIERS A Modifier is a word or set of words that

describes, clarifies, or gives more detail about a concept/part of sentence.

Modifiers can include adjectives, adverbs, phrases, and clauses

Modifiers should be located as close as possible to the word they are modifying in order to avoid confusion on what it is modifying

off the main street usually offer good sale prices.

The small shops off the main street usually offer good sale prices to shoppers looking for bargains.

EXAMPLE Flying for the first time, the roar of the

jet engines intimidated the small child, and he grew frightened as the plane roared down the runway.

The subject is usually the first noun that follows the introductory modifier.

an error. If the answer includes no other errors as
