Presidents Message
Hello Badgers!
Welcome to winter? El Nino is really messing with our “normal” weather pat-terns but for those that like to stretch the riding season, this is a blessing! For outdoorsman like me, the opposite is somewhat true as I like “some” snow for deer hunting and a hard freeze in late November so I can hit the ice for those early Walleyes, Crappies and the like. Oh well, can’t have everything.
Like most of you, I’ve been slowly mothballing my old rides for another sea-son and getting a list together of projects I’d like to complete over the winter (i.e. rebuild oil pump on the WL, fix the wiring for my accessory brake lights on the Pan etc.), if I can find the time. We have a ton of Badger activities planned for 2016 so I know I’m going to “make time” to get my bikes ready
and hope you all can do the same.
It’s also that time of year again to renew memberships, both for the AMCA and Badger Chapter. Be sure to get those in the mail so your memberships don’t lapse and so you don’t miss out on all the fun in 2016! A downloadable/printable Badger Chapter membership/renewal form is avail-able at http://badgerheritage.com/membership/. Badger Chapter renewals are due no later than Feb. 1st, 2016. Your AMCA membership is renewed on an annual basis dependent upon when you first signed up. Check your AMCA membership card for that date and remember, all AMCA Chapter’s members are required to be members in good standing with the AMCA.
Do you know someone interested in old bikes who are not a member of the AMCA and/or the Bad-gers? Feel free to invite them to a meeting! We are always looking to grow our membership and we welcome anyone with an interest in old bikes, even if you don’t own a motorcycle! The AMCA is also helping by sending an introduction email to all AMCA members in Wisconsin, who are not currently Badgers, to let them know that they have a local chapter they can belong to. This email will go out in the next few weeks.
Do you want to become more active in the chapter and help to plan or lead upcoming activities or events? Just let any of your chapter officers know and we’ll get you “hooked up”! There’s always lots to do so don’t be shy, get involved, it’s a lot of fun!
The annual Badger Heritage Winter Dinner is in its final planning stages and looks to be another “can’t miss” event! This is one of the best opportunities we all have to get to know your fellow mem-bers. It doesn’t compete with other M/C events; summer vacations etc. so, if you haven’t had the chance to come to one of these, maybe it’s your year! Last year we had 111 members in attendance! This year’s dinner will be a great “deal” as the chapter will cover some of the costs to keep the price down. There’s even a “special surprise” awaiting those that can attend so, mark your calendars for Saturday evening, Jan. 23rd. See the flyer included in this issue and I hope we’ll see you there! RSVP by no later than Jan. 4th so we can place orders for food etc.
Please be safe in your travels this holiday season and enjoy the time you’ll spend with your families and friends.
Merry Christmas & Happy New Year!
Dan

Hey Badgers!
Now that winter is here, my bikes are put away for the duration and I can’t wait for spring, but there is still plenty to do before then.
The H-D Museum and the New Berlin Quaker Steak & Lube have their Winter Bike Nights as well as the Mama Tried Motorcycle Show in Feb-ruary among other bike related activities.
So, this is the time to maybe work on your rides or do some online searching for parts for next years riding season. Or perhaps there are
a few of you out there that don’t stop riding just because of the weather.
Anyway, how ever you spend your winter, consider doing this one thing to help enhance your Bad-ger Heritage club involvement and enjoyment - Join our club Facebook page!
I know what some of you are thinking - “That’s only for kids or people with a lot of time to waste on the computer.” I would say no to both of those reasons for not joining. Currently 141 have joined our page with most of them being Badgers with some others being close friends of Badgers.
I like to consider the page as our club bulletin board with posts from members letting us know what projects they are working on or where they have been on their bikes or other related motor-cycle events they have attended. Others post questions about bike issues or parts they may be looking for. What I find very valuable are the posts about upcoming events or rides and the way members organize rides to the events that may include breakfast or other activities besides the event - all on Facebook.
So, in conclusion I ask that you to at least check out our Facebook page and see what it might offer you or what you can offer to the club with its use.

I hope to see many of you at our Winter Dinner on January 23, 2016 at the Delafield Brewhaus in Delafield, WI. Check out the poster on page 3. We will even have our very own Badger Heritage beer!
Until next time, stay safe,
Steve Peters

This story starts in 1945 during WWII when General Douglas MacArthur had re-captured all of the Philippine Islands including the Subic Bay Naval Station. This Naval Station and others were then used to receive and disperse military equipment and supplies (including brand new Big Twin Flathead, 74 cu. in. Harley Davidsons with sidecars) till the end of the war. In 1979, the USS Reeves CG-24, a Guided-Missile Cruiser ported at Subic Bay and on it was US Navy Sailor, Gerry Bellows from Milwaukee. He heard from another Sailor that there were “locals” that had some old Harleys for sale that were left there after the war. Gerry
was able to get “Shore Leave” and bought a 1945 Harley Davidson Model U Flathead. It was in rough shape and “civilianized” meaning that all of the mili-tary related parts were removed and replaced with civilian, non-military parts. With permission from his Captain, he was instructed that he couldn’t store it below deck but could strap it to the “Aft (Rear) Deck Bulkhead” behind the Missile Launcher until he got back to his home port in New Jersey several months later.
Until then, the Harley U was in dire need of tires so he ordered a pair from the states using his ship as his mailing address. The USS Reeves received its mail and supplies via helicopter (no place to land aircraft). So several months go by and while he was out in the “middle of the Pa-cific Ocean”, the supply helicopter arrives above the Aft Deck and his two tires are slowly lowered down to him! He quickly put them below deck so the Captain wouldn’t see them. Eventually, with the help of his brother and a U-Haul truck, he was able to get it back to his house on 66th St. in Milwaukee where he still lives today. How did I find Gerry? Through the Title I was able to search and eventually contact him. I rode the restored Harley U over to his house in July 2015 and he was amazed to see it again!
- Even though the VIN number has a “U” on the Motor, the actual Harley Davidson Model designation for WWII Navy Big Twin Flatheads is Model “US”. Only 217 of these “US” Models were produced for the Navy in 1945.- The fenders do not have skirts and are sometimes called “mud guards”. There are original WWII photos showing Soldiers and Sailors adding their own sheet metal skirts back on!- This Model “US” has a rare Linkert M-58 carburetor (never heard of it?!) which was only used on Navy Big Twin Flatheads from 1942-’45.- Note the large, round cylinder air cleaner. This is a rare, original “Tall Version” of the Houde Oil Bath Air Cleaner. - This bike is still in its original 3 speed with Reverse gear box configuration for Side Car use and is running the original 6 Volt, 32E Generator electrical system.
Now onto finding the next ’39 to ’44 WWII Big Twin project.

Dan con-firmed notification of this change had been printed in the fall newsletter (9/15/15) ● Discussion: Dan asked the membership there thoughts on changing the officer terms to 2 years instead of the current 1 year term. To recognize the more than 100-year history of Automobiles, Motorcycles and other vehicles...
Attention all Badgers your help is needed to make Collector Vehicle Appreciation Day a reality in Wisconsin! Earlier this year a good friend Stan Johnson and I began the process of contacting Legislators in Madison and ask-ing them to designate The 2nd Friday of July as “Collector Vehicle Appreciation Day”. A lot of hard work has gone into this process and on October 27, 2015 Joint Resolution (AJR 79) was introduced and read to the State Assembly by Representatives Skowronski, Kooyenga, Jacque, Schraa, Sinicki and Barnes; cosponsored by Senators Lazich, Stroebel, Olsen and Representative Subeck. It has now been referred to the Committee on Rules. Here is where your help is needed, please contact members of the Assembly Rules Committee to request their sup-port for AJR 79
Please CC a copy of emails sent to the Legislators to Cruisinthegrove@gmail.com. Thank you for your assistance.
