Highgate Homeowners Association
NOTES FROM THE DESK OF
DAVYA COHEN, HOA PRESIDENT
Homeowners Associations are certainly a curious invention. Before moving to Highgate I don’t recall ever living in a neighborhood that had a homeowners association. Today an HOA seems very important and unavoidable. It appears as our neighborhood ages the
responsibilities of our HOA takes on more significance and increases in it’s importance.
Serving as HOA president I can speak from my own personal experience. I know how much our neighbors and fellow board members care about Highgate and that in itself is very special.
This past year the board (consisting of myself, Tom Baxter, Diane James, Roger Spring and Jud Jones) has been very productive. They have done the following:
• Repaired the spa booster pump
• Added additional Semi Public Pool Rules Sign in pool area (as required by Pima
County)
• Reinforced slopes in both retention areas
• Removed horizontal tree on McCarty
• Repaired door on storage room (behind pool bathroom)
• Replaced light fixture at storage room (behind pool bathroom)
• Had several packrat nests removed from property
• Conducted a major neighborhood clean-up on McCarty
• Added and expanded the newsletter and sent it out via email
• Replaced landscape contractor
• Provided a special evening event of appetizers and desserts at the Baxter's,
Cohen's and Spring's homes
• Have gotten bids on cleaning of pool and spa tiles
• Will be adding magnetic signs on both gate entrances to pool
Will replace the Pool Rules Sign for next season
Thank you for giving me the job of serving as your president these last two years, it's been my pleasure to do so but I had a great board to work with.

Weed Reminder!
Please check for weeds in your front and side
yard. If the weeds are dead, please have them
pulled or raked away. If you reside on a corner
lot, the homeowner is also responsible for the area
along the side of the home as well as the curb
strip unless designated by Common Area.
New Landscaping Company In October the Board selected a new landscaping company to serve
the common areas throughout the community. A change was made
from the previous company to a new firm due to concerns about
performance expressed by both residents and the board. Our new
landscapers, Southwest Grounds, began in November. The company
has over 30 years’ experience serving HOA’s in the Phoenix and Tucson
areas and so far has been very responsive. Board member Jud Jones is
the contact person for the landscapers and can be contacted at
jjgolfer44@gmail.com if you have suggestions or concerns. The landscapers take direction
only from Jud Jones or from Alisha Smart at Platinum Management.
Our previous landscaping firm provided service every other week for a total of 14 hours per
month. Our new landscaper company will provide service four hours PER WEEK for a total of
16 hours. The monthly cost for this service is $510, an increase of $85. Currently the
landscapers are working on the basin areas, as well as maintaining the area along McCarty
Road, pool area, and cul de sacs. You might have noticed a lot of trimming at the end of
Fading Star, as well as trimming recently in two retention basins. In addition, trees at the
entrance have been trimmed to the extent they have equipment to reach, with a 12 foot
limit. As in the past weed abatement is included and will be begin in the Spring. Please
keep in mind that not all landscaping issues can be completed each visit.
Tree Removed Our poor tilted tree was removed from the southwest
portion of the neighborhood as it was leaning more and
more over McCarty Road, causing a safety hazard to
both the road and the Highgate wall. What’s left is a
lonely barrel cactus who is wondering where his old
attached friend for a number of years has gone to . .
well, a better place for all!

Did you know?
Chris Crandall has agreed to take over responsibility for our Highgate Website that
Jerry Matlock started and maintained for 16+ years? Thank you Jerry for your
dedication of time, energy and expertise for so many years!
The pool area bathroom also serves as a community library and potential sharing
space? You will find a wide range of books for sharing with neighbors, a swim mask
and paint samples/notebooks for the approved house paint colors. Who knows, we
might have a few other things to share – if you need a baby stroller or high chair for
your grandkids brief stay, contact HOA Board Member Roger Spring.

Did you know?
The dirt and other material that had built up at the bottom of McCarty Road at
La Cholla was recently cleaned up a bit by a work crew and equipment that
Kachina Homes is using for their subdivision? Thank you Mike Arnold, owner of Kachina
Homes. He may host an open house for his model homes for the neighborhood in the
next few months . . .
A man named “John” from our neighboring subdivision, La Cholla Hills, walks along
La Cholla every week and picks up debris? If you see him, thank him!
28 of your neighbors attended last week’s Highgate HOA Annual Meeting? And, it
was Stan Cohen’s birthday (age not revealed) and the chocolate cake was a big hit!
The clock at the pool now has the correct time? Yes, the battery got replaced.
Titan Recycle & Trash Pick-up days for the Holidays – normal Monday pick-up for trash
and recycling on Monday, December 24 and December 31. The Thursday pickup of
trash will be on Friday, December 28 and January 4, 2019. Normal pickup schedule
on Monday and Thursday will resume the week of January 6, 2019.
The Board is considering purchase and installation of a weather proof bulletin
board? An example from another nearby neighborhood is shown below (apparently
they did not have much new to post!)
