XC Skiing and Snowshoeing.
Downhill skiing is big in the Petoskey Area, but for those who want a different experience, cross-country skiing or snowshoeing may be just the right fit. Getting out on miles of trails – some groomed, others not – gives you the chance to stretch your legs and share the peaceful beauty of our forests, streams and lakes with a white-tailed doe or maybe a wild turkey. There’s a trail here that’s right for you – whether you’re on snowshoes or skis. It’s pure enjoyment as time glides by.
10
Below are a list of areas and parks for XC skiing and snowshoeing. See map to the right for their locations. For trail maps, please visit michigantrailmaps.com.
Many of our wineries will also be offering cross-country skiing and/or snowshoeing. For more information, call the wineries listed on page 24.

A great ski trip is more than skiing.
When you’re ready to leave the slopes behind for a while, you’ve got choices, choices, choices. Head over to Michigan’s largest indoor waterpark; try your luck at the casino; go winter rafting; or just kick back and enjoy some live music.
With so many things to do and places to see, this is much more than a ski trip. It’s a full-fledged winter vacation.
14
Have a great day
It’s your vacation, so you set the pace. But if you’d like a few tips on how to make the most of your day, well, that’s what we’re here for.
Sunnyside up, then down the slopes
Start your day at one of several fantastic eateries in the area, ranging from pancake houses to breakfast with a view. Once you’ve fueled up, head for the hills of Boyne Mountain, Boyne Highlands or Nub’s Nob for the best skiing and boarding east of the Rockies. Prefer skiing without quite so many ups and downs? Each of our three resorts has immaculately groomed cross-country trails, and more trails are open throughout the region.
…followed by a cool change of pace
We know that some guests like to spend the whole day on the slopes. But others like to mix things up a bit. If that sounds like you, we’ve got you covered. Jump on a tube and fly down the hills, or climb to the platforms and hold on while zooming down a zipline. Glide across the ice at an outdoor rink right out of a Rockwell painting, or bring a sled and see who makes it to the bottom of the hill first.
17
…and finally, a little something special
Time for the big kids to break away? Follow the Bay View Wine Trail and taste the flavors of northern Michigan or sample some craft brews at one of our local breweries. Winter weekends also mean music at a variety of night spots. Feeling lucky? Try the table games or slots at the Odawa Casino. If it’s Saturday, you might want to slow down the pace with a sleigh ride, taking in the scenery as the horses guide your way.
…then warm up to indoor attractions
When you’re ready to come inside, the fun doesn’t stop! Make a splash at Avalanche Bay™, Michigan’s largest indoor waterpark. Learn a thing or two at Maple Moon Sugarbush & Winery or pass the time at one of our museums or galleries. You can even sharpen your culinary skills with a cooking class. If you want to pamper yourself with a soothing facial or muscle relaxing stone massage, you can do that, too, at one of the area’s fantastic spas.
18
More fun outside.
The things to do outside here are, well, as big as all outdoors. Snowmobiling? Got that. Sleigh rides? We have those, too. Ziplines? Ice skating? Horseback riding? Check, check, check. If you can think of an outdoor winter activity, chances are you’ll find it here.
