Rori Paloski, Tara Bergeson

Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources

Project Overview

The focus of this project is to make citizen-collected frog and toad data readily accessible and increase citizen participation in two existing frog and toad surveys:

1. Wisconsin Frog and Toad Survey (WFTS), coordinated by the Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources (WDNR)

2. Wisconsin NatureMapping (WNM) Frog and Toad Survey, coordinated by the Citizen Science Center (CSC) at Beaver Creek Reserve

Project Overview

The existing WFTS website was housed by the U.S. Geological Survey’s (USGS) Patuxent Wildlife Research Center in Laurel, MD.

The website was transferred to Wisconsin servers and updated by WDNR staff.

The new restructured website contains:• updated general information on Wisconsin frog species

• accessibility to WFTS data via the internet

• maps of WFTS and WNM Frog and Toad Survey data

Wisconsin Frog and Toad Survey (WFTS)

Citizen-based monitoring program coordinated by the WDNR

Primary purpose is to determine status, distribution, and long-term population trends

Initiated in 1981

The WFTS began annual statewide surveys in 1984 and is now one of the longest running amphibian monitoring projects in North America

Wisconsin NatureMapping (WNM) Frog and Toad Survey

A citizen-based biodiversity survey program (mammals, birds, amphibians and reptiles of Wisconsin)

Managed by the Citizen Science Center at Beaver Creek Reserve (Fall Creek, WI)

WNM Frog and Toad Survey is a special project of Wisconsin NatureMapping, follows the same protocol as WFTS but choose routes
