The couple, who have two sons, had celebrated their 40th wedding anniversary on July 29th just days before. Sadly, his condition became incurable and he was referred by the hospital to Wigan and Leigh Hospice for end of life care.
Paula and then Emma, from the Hospice Nurse Specialists team, went to see the couple at their home in Aspull.
Margaret said: “With every visit they reassured us and explained anything and everything to us. David only had to say how he felt and they were on top of it.
“We asked how to explain things to the grandchildren and Paula sent books for that age group which explained death to them in an appropriate way. They were always there for us.”
Margaret continued to look aer David at home but by November the couple needed further support and David was admitted to the Inpatient Unit at the hospice in Hindley.
Margaret said: “Emma said ‘it’s time for you to stop being his carer and start being his wife’ and that’s what the hospice enabled me to do.
“I don’t know how people would cope without the hospice. Thank you doesn’t seem to be enough - we need a bigger word. It’s an amazing place.”
David passed away on December 27th, 2018. All donations given at his funeral were kindly donated to the hospice.
Margaret’s StoryMargaret’s husband David was cared for by the Hospice Nurse Specialists and by our Inpatient Unit team when he was diagnosed with cancer of the gall bladder in 2018.

What our patients say“My first reaction to being told I was coming into the Hospice was that these were the words I was dreading. I was told we’d like you to go to the Hospice and get looked aer and I’ve been spoiled here – you’d go a long way to find a 5-star hotel that matches the Hospice.
“The place has this aura about it – a relaxing, comfortable, reassuring aura - that just lis you. The sta always say ‘hi’ or ‘hello’. It doesn’t matter how busy they are - it’s the patient first and foremost that matters to them.”
