OWATONNA — Owatonna residents woke up Mon-day morning to some of the coldest temperatures in the state, according to the National Weather Service o ce in Chanhassen.
e air temperature was below zero and the wind chill index was even colder. Owatonna’s lowest recorded wind chill reading came at 6:55 a.m., when it felt like it was 34 degrees below zero. Lemond township had a wind chill reading of minus 35 degrees and Ellendale’s wind chill was listed at
37 degrees below zero, according to data on the weather service’s website.
Other area communities shared the cold feeling from the winds, which blew between 15 and 20 miles per hour. Waseca and Faribault had wind chill readings of minus 33 degrees and minus 35 degrees, respectively. Albert Lea’s wind chill reading was 30 degrees below zero.
e coldest reported windchill on the weather services website came from Le Seuer County, where Le Center reg-istered a minus 43 degree wind chill.

Dangerous sub-zero temperatures blanket Steele County

OWATONNA — A er being considered as a possible location for one of the world’s pre-mier adventure challenge series, Steele County will not host Tough Mudder’s Minnesota 2013 events.
“For as big as it is and as hard as we worked, (Tough Mudder scouts) just didn’t really seem to go a er Owatonna,” said Owatonna Area Chamber of Commerce and Tourism tourism director Lisa Havelka.
Tough Mudder — a 10- to 12-mile run with 25 to 35 military-style events — is designed by British Special Forces to test the all-around strength, stamina, mental grit and camaraderie of participants to raise money for the Wounded Warrior Project.
Tough Mudder organizers contacted the Owatonna Area Chamber of Commerce and Tourism in October and expressed interest in having Tough Mudder Minnesota this summer in the Owatonna area. e chamber made recommendations to the Tough Mud-der land scouts, but Havelka said the scouts didn’t nd what they needed for the events in the area.
“I received an email that said, ‘Unfortu-nately, there are too many variables,’ but thanks for all your hard work,” Havelka said.
Havelka said she wasn’t told exactly why the Owatonna area was considered.
