Findings

• Easy to install

• Cascade systems too fragile

• Larger tested systems not suitable for roll-out

• High costs

• Lack skill and knowledge in contract base

New System Required

Develop a natural refrigerant solution fit for

retrofit and roll out system must reduce the existing system style installation

by 70%(TEWI)

Design & Evaluation • Evaluate against design criteria

• Simpler, better, cheaper !

• Easy to replace existing estate with new system

• Easy to learn for service and install

• Repeatable

• Safe

• Within bylaws

• Maintainable

• Standard

• 15 year life span

• Evaluate thermodynamically & environmentally

• System must be a low carbon solution

NEW SOLUTION

Plant Design Findings• Fade out

• Variable load

• Compressor protection

• Insensitive to charge

• Repeatable

• Easy service

• Resilient

• Training still required

L.T. Pack

Indicative Costs

•Labour and material costs on a par with existing R404A NRC packs

Great opportunity on component cost:

•Bulk buying/price agreements with component manufacturers

•Competition between pack builders (and through their established supply routes

Training • Develop a two fold learning approach

✦Firstly theory from the E-learning system

✦Secondly a practical on the systems

✦All sections will have an exam and pass

mark

✦All refrigeration mechanics will have to pass

before working on our systems

Training Cont.

•A passport system will be put in place to make

sure only qualified personnel work on system

•We will work with City and Guilds to develop a

national CO2 Refrigeration qualification (ready Dec

2009)

IMPLEMENTATION PLAN(so far)

• Install 6 systems 09/10

• Install 20-30 systems 10/11

• Install 150 systems 11/12

Conclusions• CO2 components are available for

transcritical operation

• This offers advantages over cascade operation

• Efficient operation

• Heat recovery options

• Some new techniques are required

• We are restricted by the industry’s capacity
