Why do buildings decay?

Maths and our Built Heritage
What is the most common cause of problems in old
buildings?
There are various forms of decay which commonly affect old
buildings. Most of these are caused by dampness. The roof and
walls of a bulding are designed to keep out the rain. Gutters and
rainwater pipes are designed to collect rainwater and channel it
away from buildings.
Capping stones and cills are there to protect the tops of walls and
openings. If any of these items are damaged they do not work
effectively and the building becomes damp.
Damp conditions causes the growth of fungi or the presence of
insects which attack wood. Dampness in buildings can damage
decoration and furniture and make the building an uncomfortable
place to be.
