Kāvyālaṅkāra-sūtra-vṛtti of ācārya Vāmana is an outstanding treatise on Sanskrit poetics. Written in the form of sūtra-s, it profoundly illuminates the di�erent aspects of literary criticism like rīti, guṇa, doṣa, and alaṅkāra, etc. It is the text that introduced the idea of “kāvysyātmā” or “soul of poetry” with its famous aphorism, rītirātmā kāvyasya. A thorough understanding of ācārya Vāmana’s theoretical position is crucial to understanding the later debates of Sanskrit literary theories.

This workshop aims to introduce participants to the fundamental tenets of Sanskrit literary criticism through close textual readings of selections from Kāvyālaṅkāra-sūtra-vṛtti.
