WorldSkills Americas 2012
WorldSkills Jamaica successfully participated in the 2nd WorldSkills
Americas Competition in Sao Paulo Brazil November 2012 and copped Bronze
medal in the areas of Welding and Fashion Technology.
The WorldSkills Americas 2012 competition saw over 1200 competitors from
26 countries competing for gold in 38 skill areas including Fashion
Technology, Welding, Cooking, Electrical Installation, Restaurant Services,
and IT Network System Administration.
WorldSkills Jamaica assembled over 43 competitors from 18 Institutions
(HEART Colleges and TVET Institutes, University of Technology, Jamaica,
Brown’s Town Community College, The Mico University, and Shortwood
Teacher’s College) in December 2011 as part of the National Training
Programme for WorldSkills Americas 2012 and WorldSkills Germany 2013.
The skills team executed training interventions over the period to facilitate
the needs of the respective skill teams. Eliminations were executed under the
supervision of newly trained Quality Assurance Teams. This resulted in the
selection of 3 competitors and 3 experts to represent Jamaica at the
WorldSkills Americas 2012 in Sao Paulo Brazil.

The WorldSkills Americas Competition is one of the largest regional skills
Competition in the world and Sao Paulo was the biggest to date.
Approximately 200,000 visitors attended WorldSkills Americas 2012 which
was held from November 7-10, 2912 in Sao Paulo Brazil.
WorldSkills Americas (WSA) is a non-governmental, not for profit
organization, and it’s main objective is to provide a means for vocational
education quality improvement, by way of exchange between North America,
Central America and Caribbean and South America countries, involving
governments, industries, commerce and vocational education and training
organizations/institutions.
The WorldSkills Americas with the cooperation of its member countries,
every two years, organizes a competition focused on vocational training in
one of its member countries. The first competition was held in Rio de
Janeiro. March 2010.

HEART Trust/NTA South East Region-2 hosted Power Up Skills! on January 24, 2013 at the
Garmex Academy.
The focus was to promote the programmes and services offered at institutions and the Try-a-
Skill was a means of showcasing the practical side of the training.
HIGHLIGHTS: STVET OPEN DAY 2012
HEART Trust/NTA Southwest TVET Institute hosted Open Day and Expo on September 2012
at the Newport West campus.
The focus was to promote the programmes and services offered at Southwest TVET
Institutions under the theme “Building Communities through Education”. Scores of students
and teachers from over 15 schools were in attendance and viewed exhibits from over 10
exhibitors.
Infusion of Skills
Through the infusion of WorldSkills
standards into our training activities,
we continue to sharpen the skills of
our learners. The process seeks to
raise the standards of skills training on
a continuous basis to ensure currency
and relevance. Our collective
knowledge and experience will no
doubt, impact the education
transformation process.
As we continue to expand our network,
we welcome new members and
continued engagement with all
stakeholders to share the goal of
elevating the standard of skills and its
continued positive impact on the
Jamaican workforce.
The month of March is dubbed “Skills Awareness Month”.
The aim is to promote skills throughout all the five regions
of the HEART Trust/NTA. Regions and Institutions will host
Open Day Activities to engage stakeholders, skills
exhibitions and promote training products and services.
