Grade 5 Information Session

Background

• Williams Parkway has 720 students • Feeder Schools: RD Barber, Hanover, Hilldale and

Massey Street • 9 Grade 6 Classes (3 IBT) • 10 Garde 7 classes (2 IBT) • 9 Grade 8 Classes (2 IBT) • 2 Special Needs Classes • IBT is a Regional Learning Choice Program that

has an separate application process that started in January 2018

School Day

• Starts at 8:30 am

• Ends at 2:30 pm

• 1 – 20 min Homeroom period 11:10 to 11:30

• Lunch from 11:30 to 12:30

• 7 - 40 min periods

The Week

• We are on a 5 day cycle • Periods are 40 minutes (7 per day) • Students will have the following in Grade 6

– 11 x 40 min periods in Math and Science – 11 x 40 min periods in Language and Social Studies – 5 x 40 min French periods (1 per day) – 3 x 40 min PHE periods – 2 x 40 min Music periods (instrumental or regular) – 1 x 40 min Tech – 1 x 40 min Maker Space – 1 x 40 min Art Period

Student Expectations

• Arrive prepared to learn (learning materials)

• Arrive on time

• Communicate with your teacher

• Be respectful

Late Policy • Unauthorized late arrival happens when a

student arrives late first thing in the morning or after lunch

• After 3 unauthorized late arrivals a detention is given to students after school or at lunch

• After 10 a letter goes home and a meaningful consequence is provided (loss of privilege)

Discipline • To support our discipline policy we have a Responsibility

Room • For students in need of behavioural support we have our

Contact Program. Students are referred to this program prior to arrival or via an in-school review committee

• We use a Tier system to apply progressive discipline and

track behaviour

• Focus is on progressive discipline and restorative practices that emphasize repair and meaningful consequences

• Tier system resets January 1st.

Progressive Discipline Tier 1 - First offence of a minor behaviour - A period or two in the responsibility room - Teacher will call home / reflection sheet signed and returned

Tier 2 - Second offence of similar behaviour or a behaviour that is significant - 3-4 periods in the responsibility room and loss of regular lunch - Teacher will call home / reflection sheet signed and returned

Tier 3 - Second offence of similar behaviour or a behaviour that is significant - 5-6 periods in the responsibility room and loss of regular lunch - VP or Principal will call home - reflection sheet signed and returned - Possible referral via ISRC to the contact program

Progressive Discipline In-school suspensions - Should a significant behaviour take place or consistent

negative behaviour - VP or Principal will call home / reflection sheet complete

and signed - referral to contact program via ISRC

Formal Suspensions - Behaviours which are identified in the PDSB Code of

Conduct or in violation of the Safe School Act - Typically for violent or criminal behaviour - Mandatory suspensions exist - Suspensions 4 days or longer are referred to the Fresh Start

Program

Lunch

• Students’ have 60 mins for lunch

• First 20 min students eat in the gym then go outside

• We offer Pizza lunch on Wednesday and Friday and Subway on Tuesday

• Students require permission to go home for lunch - the form is filled out at the beginning of the year

• Terry Miller is off limits

Hallways and Lockers

• Students must sign-out and have a hall pass when in the halls during class time

• Students may go to their locker first thing in the morning, before and after lunch and at the end of the day

• Students will share lockers with a partner

• Valuables are to be stored there or left at home

• Backpacks do not go to class

Activity Fee

• $40 fee will be charged to each family

• This covers key school events – Jungle sport

– Dance (Ambitious Movement)

– Jeff Salem Drumming program

– One Voice one Team with Orlando Bowen

– Guest / Motivational Speakers

• A donation can also be made in lieu of chocolate or magazine sales

BYOD

• Students are encouraged to bring their own device

• Devices are to support learning, not distract students

• They must follow the teacher policy when in class

• We do not take responsibility for lost devices

Bussing

• To be eligible for the bus, students must live 2 km away using the PDSB formula

• We do not control bussing; STOPR does

• All bussing information is on ww.stopr.ca

• We have limited courtesy spots on the bus

• A TF004 form needs to be filled out in September to apply for courtesy seat

• Courtesy seats are not allocated until early October

Car Drop-Off

• Please use the drop-off lane in the parking lot

• Please be patient and watch your speed

• Front of school reserved for 10 regular busses and 7 Spec Ed busses
