What is an objective?

What is an Objective?An objective is a brief, clear

statement that describes what knowledge and skills you expect your students to acquire.

Today’s ObjectiveBy the end of this session, participants

will understand the importance of objectives and will be able to write objectives for student learning goals.

Why Do We Need Objectives?• Help students reach their destination• Keep teachers on track• Determine what to assess

What to Consider When Writing Objectives:

• Desired learning outcomes for students• Time frames for objectives (annual,

unit, daily lesson plans)• Context of your class• District and/or state educational

standards for your grade level• How the activities and assessments

align with goals

Which Objective is Well Written?• Students will know how to use

the present tense (no)• They will write a letter about

their family (no)• Students will be able to write 5

sentences using the present tense (yes!)

Tips for Writing Objectives

Make sure your objectives are SMART:

Specific – What skill are we practicing?Measurable – How will I assess this?Achievable – Can my students do this?Relevant – Why are they learning this?Time-bound – When will it be achieved?

Is this a Smart Objective? Yes!

By the end of the class, 75% of the students will be able to correctly spell 8 of the 10 vocabulary words from Unit 1.

Tips for Writing ObjectivesRemember “SWBAT”

Students Will Be Able To…For example:

Students will be able to orally describe what they did yesterday in three sentences using simple past.

Students will be able to write 5 sentences using the present tense in 10 minutes.

75% of students will be able to demonstrate comprehension of a short text by answering 5 questions.
