Regional Studies Programme (RSP)

• A prestigious scholarship programme introduced byour Prime Minister in 2008

• Established in 5 schools– ACS (Independent)– RI, RGS, Victoria School, Cedar Girls

• Around 100 scholarships to be awarded per cohort across the five schools

To nurture a group of students who can:

1. Converse in Malay 2. Understand the cultureand contemporary development in the nearby region

Objectives of RSP

To enable these students to effectively engage in the region through field trips, homestays and Values-In Action programmes

1. Malay Special Programme (MSP)

2. Understanding Southeast Asia (USEA) NOTE : RSP lessons are curriculum lessons and take precedence over CCA activities and remedials unless students are representing the school in competitions

RSP comprises

• Offered as a Third Language• Examinable yearly• Lessons conducted outside

curriculum time in the school • Mondays for Year Ones

(3 to 6 pm) – Every Week• No changing of dates since MSP

teacher have to teach other levels on other days

Malay Special Programme

• Scholars will take the GCE-O level MSP examination at the end of Year 4

• Exam format:– Paper 1: Email and Essay writing in Malay

(20 marks)– Paper 2: Grammar, Vocabulary, Comprehension

passage, Cloze passage in Malay (30 marks)(Multiple-choice and open ended questions)

– Paper 3: Oral Conversation and Listening Comprehension in Malay (50 marks)

Malay Special Programme

• An enrichment module specially designed by the school

• Key pedagogy: Collaborative Learning

• Lessons conducted outside curriculum time• Wednesdays for Year Ones

(3:15 to 5:15 pm), 12 sessions, from mid Feb onwards

• Assessment: Coursework and group presentations

Understanding Southeast Asia (USEA)

• Scholarship allowance of $1,000 per annum

• Annual school fees subsidy of $2,400• Subsidised Enrichment Programmes

including fieldtrips and seminars• Funding for overseas cultural immersion

trips (maximum of $100 per day)

RSP Scholarship

• Year 1 Singapore citizens (PR and Foreigners not eligible)• Not taking Malay or Higher Malay as Mother Tongue (MT)• Those exempted from MT are eligible to apply • Attained PSLE Score of 240 points and above• Will be taking Malay Special Programme as 3rd language

(if accepted into RSP, student will be registered by the school to offer MSP)

• Exhibit scholarly qualities including leadership and other personal attributes

• Passed interview with panel of RSP teachers

Eligibility for RSP

Year One USEA lessons conducted in 2017

• Playing of traditional Indonesian musical instruments of gamelan

• Playing of traditional Malay games(5-stones, gasing, capteh, congkak, sepak takraw)

• Cooking of traditional Nasi Goreng Kampung• Visits to Kampung Glam, Malay Heritage Centre,

Asian Civilisation Museum and Hari Raya celebration at RSP teacher’s home

• Cultural daycamp and MOE - organised seminar (combined with other 4 RSP schools)

USEA lessons (presentations, discussions)

• Focus on ‘Terrorism and Religious Extremism in Southeast Asia’ with the study of the threats of terrorism and religious extremism in the SEA region, including Singapore

• Visited Internal Security Department Heritage Centre, Khalijah Mosque (where the Religious Rehabilitation Group is housed) and theMUIS Harmony Centre

• Overseas Cultural Immersion trip to Negara Brunei Darussalam during the November school holidays

• Visited the MUIS Harmony Centre to learn more on Islam and Muslims amongst the multi-racial and multi-religious society of Singapore

• Group projects on the lives of the Southeast Asian workers; they visited and studied ethnic enclaves of Thai, Filipino, Burmese and Indonesian migrant workers in Golden Mile, Lucky Plaza, Peninsula Plaza and City Plaza Malls respectively

• Overseas cultural immersion trip to Chiangmai, Thailand to teach the children English and played games and painting of murals for local school

• Scholars completed Research paper on their overseas cultural immersion trip

MOE feedback about RSP in ACS (Independent)

• Comprehensive and interesting activities conducted for the scholars in the RSP

• Year 4 scholars achieved average B4 grade in the MSP GCE-O level examinations

• Year 5 and Year 6 students able to continue to offer RSP scholarships at IB

• Majority of the Year 6 RSP scholars obtained Pass with Distinctions for MSP and Grade 7 for History in the IBDP exams
