The Cypress Hills Ability Centre is gearing up to celebrate an important milestone this weekend. A banquet and program are scheduled to be held on Oct. 19 at the Christ the King Catholic Church Hall to recognize the Cen-tre’s 30th Anniversary. “It’s going to be a fun-filled evening,” said Dawn Desautels, Chair of the Ability Centre Board of Directors. “Not only are we cele-brating 30 years and all the achievements that have come about through those years, but we’re also holding this event as a fundraiser which will go directly towards the Ability Centre.” The event is slated to start at 5 p.m. with cocktails, which will be followed by a catered meal. The program will include an appear-ance by Colby Nargang, an Elvis and Roy Or-
bison impersonator. The celebration will also feature a silent auc-tion fundraiser. Items to be auctioned include a signed Braydon Coburn jersey, a Badger jersey signed by last year’s provincial hockey team, a signed football from the Saskatche-wan Roughriders, a 32-inch TV, and a patio set, said Desautels.Funds raised through the 30th Anniversary event will be used to directly benefit partici-pants at the Ability Centre by providing rec-reational opportunities and transportation, she said. The Ability Centre organization actually got its start more than 30 years ago when it ini-tiated one group home in Shaunavon. The Shaunavon Ability Centre, however, officially opened its doors in 1983 and has been active ever since.

“Since then, there’s been a huge development and evolution of the services we provide,” said Desautels. “Today, we have two group homes, two group living homes, a number of support-ed living arrangements, and the Ability Centre itself with lots of opportunities.” The Ability Centre organization also pro-vides supported employment opportunities, such as through the Sarcan depot, and trans-portation to Centre participants and local se-niors, she said.
In the future, Desautels said the organization hopes to continue developing and evolving their services. “Our whole goal is to assist and support our participants in fulfilling their hopes and dreams and wishes to be participating citi-zens,” she explained. “Nothing stays the same, though, so we’ll continue to evolve and may even look at expansion in the future, expand-ing our services outside of Shaunavon and area.”

CANCER(June 21 to July 22)The Moon is your ruler, which means
you feel every Full Moon. Today, how-ever, the Full Moon makes you feel tornbetween the demands of home and fam-ily versus the demands of your job andexternal world.
LEO(July 23 to Aug. 22)This is an accident-prone day for you,
because of the tension of the Full Moon.An accident doesn’t have to happen;however, emotional upsets and distrac-tions could be hazardous.
VIRGO(Aug. 23 to Sept. 22)Double-check financial matters today,
especially with banks, because with aFull Moon, something tends to come to ahead. (“I have no money!”)
LIBRA(Sept. 23 to Oct. 22)The only Full Moon directly opposite

On Oct. 18, 1929, women are finally declared “persons” under Canadian law. The historic legal victory is due to the persistence of five Alberta women -- Emily Murphy, Nellie McClung, Irene Parlby, Louise McKinney and Henrietta Muir Edwards. The battle started in 1916. From Murphy’s very first day as a judge, lawyers had challenged her rulings because she is not a “person” under Canadian law. By 1927, the women have garnered support all across Cana-da. They petition the nation’s Supreme Court. After five weeks of debate, the appeal is unanimously denied. Shocked, the women take the fight to the Privy Council of the British government; in those days Canada’s highest court.
• Lord Sankey, Lord Chancellor of England’s Privy Council, announced the unanimous decision. It stated “the exclusion of women from all public offices is a relic of days more barbarous than ours. And to those who would ask why the word ‘person’ should include females, the obvious answer is, why should it not?” • In 1939, portraits of each of the Famous Five were unveiled in the Alber-ta Legislature. • In 1979, a medallion commemorating the 50th anniversary of the Per-sons Case, designed by Dora de Pedery-Hunt, was released. • In 1999, a monument at Calgary’s Olympic Plaza was unveiled. That same year, the Governor General’s annual commemorative awards were established, to recognize those who have made outstanding contributions to women’s quality of life in Canada. • The “Famous Five” bronze monument on Parliament Hill in Ottawa, unveiled Oct. 18, 2000, commemorates the women activists. Until then there had only been two statues on Parliament Hill dedicated to women, both Queens of England. • In 2003, the Famous 5 will be featured on Canada’s $50 bill. Former Senator and human rights activist Thérèse Casgrain will also be featured on the back.

CROP REPORT FOR THE PERIOD OCTOBER 8 TO 14, 2013gov.ca - Ninety-seven per cent of the 2013 crop is now combined, according to Saskatchewan Agriculture’s Weekly Crop Report. Dry weather in most areas of the province allowed many producers to finish harvest. The five-year average (2008-2012) for this time of year is 91 per cent combined. The southwestern and west-central regions have 99 per cent of the crop in the bin, with the northeastern and northwestern regions at 98 per cent, the southeastern region at 95 per cent and the east-central region at 94 per cent.Harvest progress by crop district ranges from completed to 90 per cent combined. For the most part, flax, canaryseed, chickpeas and oats are the crops that are still being combined. Areas in the southeastern and east-central regions received significant rainfall – up to 47 mm – last week, which delayed harvest. Across the province, topsoil moisture on cropland is rated as four per cent surplus, 60 per cent adequate, 23 per cent short and 13 per cent very short. Topsoil moisture on hay land and pasture is rated as one per cent surplus, 60 per cent adequate, 27 per cent short and 12 per cent very short. Crop damage due to rain has resulted in bleaching and sprouting in some cereal crops.Livestock producers are indicating adequate amounts of hay, straw, greenfeed and feed grain for their winter feeding supplies.Farmers are finishing harvest, hauling bales and completing fall weed control operations.Follow the 2013 Crop Report on Twitter at @SKGovAg.
