Definition: To closely examine and work out what something is.

Summary pages 10-21

• Beowulf and the Geats enter Heorot and talk with Hrothgar. Beowulf explains he is there to kill Grendel.

• Hrothgar invites Beowulf and his warriors to a big feast.

• Unferth tries to wind Beowulf up and says he cannot beat Grendel, but Beowulf claims he can!

• Hrothgar shows Beowulf and the Geats to the hall where they will rest for the night.

• While everyone – but Beowulf - is sleeping, Grendel enters and horrifically attacks a brave Geat.

• Beowulf leaps up, attacks Grendel and rips off his arm.

• Everyone quickly wakes up once they hear Grendel’s roar.

• Beowulf and The Geats celebrate by hanging Grendels arm on the door.

Beowulf crouched on the edge of the bench, intent, almost angry.

Model the annotation on p.4

Meaning: to stoop or bend low.

Implies that Beowulf is so angry that men have been killed by a monster, he wants to act and help them straight away.

P.4 Beowulf has been listening to the storyteller tell them about Grendel killing the Danes

Meaning: sharply focused determined and intense

This indicates that Beowulf is so determined on seeking revenge, he seems angry
