Preface

This book contains extended and revised versions of a set of selected papers fromthe EWG-DSS workshops held in London and Paris, in June and in November2011, respectively. These workshops were organized by the Euro Working Groupon Decision Support Systems (EWG-DSS) and partially sponsored by the As-sociation of European Operational Research Societies (EURO), in cooperationwith the Management School University of Liverpool (ULMS) in the UK; theUniversity of Toulouse, the Institute of Research in Informatics of Toulouse(IRIT) in France; the UNINOVA - CA3 - Computational Intelligence ResearchGroup in Portugal; the School of Management, University of Plymouth in theUK; the company SimTech Simulation Technology in Austria; the Institute ofLogic and Theory of Science (ILTC), Brazil; the University of Belgrade in Ser-bia; the School of Business, Economics and Informatics at Birkbeck, Universityof London in the UK; the Paris-Dauphine University in France; the Laboratoired’Analyse et Modelisation de Systemes pour l’Aide a la DEcision (LAMSADE)in France and the Decision Analysis Special Interest Group of the British ORSociety (DASIG).

The purposes of the London and Paris 2011 EWG-DSS workshops were tobring together academics, researchers, practitioners, and enterprises interestedin implementing collaborative perspectives for different kinds of environments. The workshops themes were “Decision Support Systems” and “CollaborativeDecision Making,” respectively. Hence, the scientific areas of interest for se-lected contributions from these two outstanding workshops were: (a) distributedgroup support systems; (b) collaborative decision making; (c) supply chain man-agement; (d) information technologies; and (e) simulation. In addition, sinceeffective collaboration leads to collaborative advantages and also to a betterpartnership performance, the proper understanding and visualization is to besupported by considering different perspectives of collaborations in real envi-ronments. In this context, the London and Paris 2011 EWG-DSS workshops’selected papers are representative of the current research activities in the area ofdecision support systems and addresses these challenges by considering a largenumber of research topics: from more static and abstract ones, such as conceptualmodels, to more dynamic and technical ones, such as decision support systemsand software simulations and specification, from more enterprise-oriented ones, such as business knowledge management process and collaborative specificationand requirements to more multi-objective and multi-criteria expert systems tosupport the different business behaviors in collaborative environments.

Both 2011 EWG-DSS workshops, London and Paris, considered 39 and 13papers for oral presentation each. From the total of 52 papers, 11 papers wereselected for publication in this edition by considering their content, structureand presentation quality. This led to a “full-paper” acceptance ratio of 22%,

VI Preface

and shows the intention of preserving a high-quality forum for the next edi-tions of EWG-DSS workshops. The proceedings selection and publication pro-cess was based on a double-blind paper evaluation method: each selected paperwas reviewed by at least two internationally known experts from the EWG-DSSProgram Committee.

The high quality of the London and Paris EWG-DSS workshop programswas enhanced by five keynote lectures, delivered by distinguished guests who arerenowned experts in their fields, including (alphabetically): Alex Duffy (Univer-sity of Strathclyde, Glasgow, UK), Philip Powell (School of Business, Economicsand Informatics at Birkbeck, University of London, UK), and Rita Ribeiro (CA3– Computational Intelligence Research Group at UNINOVA, Portugal) for theLondon’s workshop, and (alphabetically): Denis Bouyssou (Centre National deRecherche Scientifique in Paris, France) and Sihem Amer-Yahia (Qatar Com-puting Research Center, Qatar) for the Paris workshop. Their lectures were veryinteresting and there was a high level of information exchange for further fruitfulcooperation among all participants. We would like to take this opportunity toexpress our gratitude to all those who contributed to the EWG-DSS workshopsactivities in 2011, including authors, reviewers, Program Committee members, and institutional sponsors. Finally, we hope you will find the contents useful andinteresting to tackle many of the collaborative challenges, in terms of researchand practice activities, when addressing any of the related research areas.

Euro Working Group on Decision Support

Systems

The EWG-DSS is a Working Group on Decision Support Systems within EURO,the Association of the European Operational Research Societies.

The main purpose of the EWG-DSS is to establish a platform for encourag-ing state-of-the-art high quality research and collaboration within the decisionsupport systems (DSS) community. Additional EWG-DSS aims are to:

• Encourage the information exchange among practitioners, end-users, and re-searchers in the area of DSS

• Enforce networking among the DSS communities and facilitate activities thatare essential for starting up international cooperation research and projects

• Facilitate professional academic and industrial opportunities for its members• Favor the development of innovative models, methods, and tools in the field

DSS and related areas• Actively promote the interest in DSS in the scientific community by organizing

dedicated workshops, seminars, mini-conferences, and conference streams inmajor conferences, as well as editing special and contributed issues in relevantscientific journals.

The EWG-DSS was founded during a memorable EURO Summer Institute onDSS that took place at Madeira, Portugal, in May 1989. This Summer Institutewas organized by two well-known academics of the OR community: Jean-PierreBrans and Jose Paixao. It enjoyed the participation of 24 young researchers of16 different nationalities. The number of EWG-DSS members has substantiallygrown along the years. By the end of 2011 we were over 150 registered members, coming from various nationalities.

Through the years, quite a few well-qualified research co-operations have beenestablished within the group members, which have generated valuable contribu-tions to the DSS field in journal publications. Since its creation, the EWG-DSShas held annual meetings in various European countries, and has taken activepart in the EURO Conferences on decision-making-related subjects.

Since the beginning of 2011, the EWG-DSS coordination board has beencomposed of: Pascale Zarate (France), Fatima Dargam (Austria), Rita Ribeiro(Portugal), Jorge E. Hernandez (UK), Boris Delibasic (Serbia) and ShaofengLiu (UK).
