The bowl that always sat on Grandma’s table. Aunt Esther’s pickle canister. The little rocker that’s rocked three generations of babies. They all hold special memories.

Join us for lunch with Author Dede Bartlett when she discusses the family stories behind the antiques and objects we have in our homes. The event, which will take place on November 7 at 11:30 am, is a collaboration with the New Canaan Historical Society and will take place in the Lindstrom Room.

Dede will share her process for taking inventory of family treasures, gathering relevant information, and recording it so that family and friends can appreciate what memories are captured in a pitcher, a pocket watch, or a breakfront cabinet.

Dede co-chairs the Jim and Dede Bartlett Foundation and is the author of a three-volume memoir, “Discovering My Lost Family: The Unexpected Journey of an American Woman.” Tickets are $40 and advanced reservations are required. More information at www.nchistory.org.

“Our goal for the year once again is to raise enough money to cover our operating expenses,” said Board President Judy Bentley. “Since dues cover less than 25% of our expenses and we receive no town funding, our goal is to raise the balance through fundraising and investment income.”

Donor generosity over the years has enabled Staying Put to build a long-term fund of $1.1 million, half of which is invested with the New Canaan Community Foundation. This fund is very important because it allows us to invest in new programs and services and to ensure that we will be able to support members well into the future.

Expenses in 2019-20 are projected to be $360,000, mainly for salaries and benefits. Membership dues are projected to be $72,000, which covers less than 25% of our expenses. The difference is made up primarily by the generosity of our supporters.

Scam Alert! "Don't let this happen to you"

This is a facsimile of a telephone call one of our members recently got. Read carefully. It could happen to anyone.Staying Put Member: Hello.Scammer: Mr. Smig? We’ve detected fraud in your Social Security account. We’re disabling your account. Member: Oh, no. My social security check is my only income. What happened? What should I do?Scammer: OK. What’s your Social Security number?Member: Why? Scammer: We’re just checking to be sure it’s you.Member: Ok. (Member gives out SS number.)Scammer: Hmmmm. This is very serious. We can get your social security account reinstated but there is a service charge. We’ll need a credit card number.Member: OK. (Member gives out credit card number.)

It was a beautiful August evening when 58 members joined us for the annual Members-Only Woodway Beach Club picnic. Above: Jeanne Gnuse, Carol Hollyday, Janecke Madsen, Weezie Stoops, and Debbie Wright.

Blood pressure is a key indicator of cardiovascular health. So it’s especially important to make sure that yours is checked regularly – and accurately. (The normal range is between 90/60 and 130/80 m hg.)

The following measuring mistakes have been shown to elevate your blood pressure reading:

• Having no support for your back or feet• Sitting with crossed legs• Having a full bladder• Not supporting your arm• Wrapping the cuff over clothing• Using a cuff that’s not the correct size• Engaging in conversation

Finally, blood pressure is very dynamic. A reading can change 10 or even 20 points over the course of seconds. Current guidelines recommend taking two separate readings – one minute apart – and averaging the two numbers. Nic Holzberger, Director, Member Services

Everyone had a waterfront table! Thanks to Donna and Joe Simone for sponsoring this fabulous potluck picnic.

Scammer: Excellent. We will get back to you in a day or so. Member: What?? Wait! Wait! Don’t hang up! Hello…Hello. Oh, no! I think I was just scammed.

Scammers play on fear and confusion. Don’t give out your social security or credit card numbers to anyone over the phone or by email. Instead call Staying Put.

Our annual barbecue was an evening of great food and friends for 33 members including Dick and Lois Sandberg and Kip and Mike Farrell. Thanks to Barb and Jon Achenbaum for hosting.
