FROM THE EXECUTIVE DIRECTORSuzanne Stell, M.Ed., CALT

“Struggle Becomes Strength”

This inspiring message became the theme as we commenced a new school year after taking on the hurdles of a year ago, from navigating the COVID-19 pandemic and moving into a new building to evaluating and adapting classroom protocols, conducting seven drive-through vaccination clinics and reshaping how to safely conduct sports events and fine arts events. At the May 2021 graduation ceremony, speaker Travis Hollman, a Shelton parent and president and CEO of Hollman Inc., shared with the Class of ’21 his own past of navigating education and life with ADHD and dyslexia. “Struggle becomes strength,” he said as he shared his belief that the world needs those who think differently because they have conquered adversity and are skilled at finding creative solutions. “This is where life gets, honestly, easier for you,” he told our students. “This is where you start using your gift. The world needs the way you think differently. They need the way you overcome.”

Class of 2021 Valedictorian Connor Swearingen proclaimed perseverance as Shelton’s most defining feature as we — students, parents, faculty and community — rose to meet the year’s obstacles with hard work and dedication. He challenged his classmates to become advocates for self, as well as for others. He told us that, through leadership and love, we can do things the Shelton Way — with perseverance and exuberance.

Dr. Michael Sorrell, President of Paul Quinn College, continued the theme of facing adversity with grit, courage and hope at our staff in-service meeting in August 2021. “Our next will absolutely be better than our now. But how great our next will be is based on what we do right now — what we put in ourselves, what we put in each other and what we put in our students. Embrace the expectation of greatness that comes after a struggle.”

Through these challenging times, we have learned some valuable lessons as a community that will indeed make us stronger. We have learned:

• To reach out in order to help each other and accept help.

• To take the time to listen to each other and to reflect on our own state of mind.

• To celebrate the triumphs when they happen and not take our blessings for granted.

Events

We remained undeterred in our commitment to all of our curricular and co-curricular programs, activities and events, including sports and fine arts. Students led the way with grace and optimism as they stretched, grew and thrived. We celebrated milestones and enjoyed open house, pep rallies, fall fest, Togetherness Day and our Lower School winter parade. In the fall, Homecoming showcased Charger pride with performances from our cheerleaders, Chargerettes and drumline. We also welcomed grandparents to our new campus for Grandparents’ Day, where students proudly presented their new school and eagerly shared their talents and accomplishments.

Wellness Initiative

The launching of the Wellness Initiative, made possible by a grant from the Moody Foundation, has made us even stronger. Children with learning differences, such as language learning differences, attention difficulties and sensory-motor challenges, have always been at risk for stress, depression and anxiety, but the pandemic made things exponentially harder for our most vulnerable children. The Wellness Initiative is an intervention program for students, with the possibility of adding Shelton parents, teachers and staff in the future. The program is designed to educate, alleviate and combat the effects of stress on a physical, mental, emotional, psychological and behavioral level. We are grateful for the Moody Foundation’s funding, which will ensure that Shelton can provide our students with the wellness resources they need, as well as our partners, including Dr. Madhukar Trivedi, Chief of the Division of Mood Disorders and the founding director of the Center for Depression Research and Clinical Care at UT Southwestern Medical Center, and Rusty Lozano, founder of the Center for Biofeedback and Behavior Therapy. We are teaching proven strategies to help our students identify stress and learn self-regulation strategies through methods such as art and exercise therapy, mindfulness and biofeedback and animal therapy to name just a few. We are also pleased to be able to bring back the “Horses and Humans” program, which teaches hands-on equestrian fundamentals and, in the process, develops skills such as situational awareness, teamwork, core strength and relaxation.

Four Business Entities

Our incredible bundled services distinguish us from other educational providers:

1) School — the largest independent school worldwide serving intelligent students who happen to have a learning difference

2) Evaluation Center — a place where advanced diagnostic evaluations are offered to families, each seeking a diagnosis and recommendations for remediation and accommodations

3) Speech-Language-Hearing Center — a center that provides year-round therapy to the community, including screenings at other schools

4) Outreach/Teacher Training Department — a group that trains teachers and other professions, offers a summer program, provides a community tutoring program, and carries Shelton’s mission locally, statewide, nationwide, and even internationally

Partners

We continue to partner with a robust team of experts:

• Nurses, health care networks, including Dallas County Health and Human Services and the Centers for Disease Control

• Counselors

• University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center/Texas Health Resources

• Independent Schools Association of the Southwest, local and regional ISAS schools, local ISDs

• SAGE Dining Services

• Shelton Parents’ Association

• Texas Association of Private and Parochial Schools

• Shelton’s Board of Trustees

QREM Report

Findings from the QREM 2020 Report highlighted the success of our students and alumni:

• Shelton alumni become more proficient in reading and mathematics the longer they attend Shelton, and their performances become better than their peers in neighboring school districts.

• Shelton alumni are better prepared for the rigors of a college education than their peers across the country and public-school students in Dallas and Collin counties.

• Shelton students enroll at college at a higher rate than students with learning differences — 88.1 percent of all Shelton students between 2012-2019 enrolled at a college or university.

• A higher rate of Shelton students graduated with a college degree than their public school counterparts.

Architecture Award

Our new building was recognized by a panel of architects and educational facility experts, who selected the Shelton School as an Outstanding Project in the Fall 2021 Learning by Design Architectural and Interior Design Awards of Excellence in the Renovation/Adaptive Reuse/Restoration category. CaCo Architecture designed the conversion of the 30-acre, 330,000-square-foot single-story 1970s office campus to provide a “welcoming environment supporting the school’s pedagogy in a student-centered and technologically rich setting that is calm and flexible in offering a variety of educational venues.”

Diversity and Inclusion

Consuela Teague, who earned her Diversity and Inclusion Certification at Cornell University, was chosen to lead Shelton’s diversity and inclusion program. Her goal is to engage in open communication.

National Recognition

Shelton earned five stars on Niche, a national ranking and review site providing information on schools and colleges. When asked about favorite school events or traditions at Shelton, 36 percent said school plays and 18 percent said Homecoming. Here’s what one parent said, “Dyslexia and ADHD run deep in my family. When my child was identified with such, then denied services by our local public school, we found such relief when we found Shelton. He walked in the first day of school and never looked back. The school completely understands that every child learns differently. They know what dyslexia and related disorders are, and most importantly, which learning interventions work best for each child. The school is very understanding of the trauma the child and parents may have gone through before finding the right school, and therefore very nurturing. We have had a wonderful experience at the Shelton School. I can’t recommend this school enough!”

Thank you for your ongoing support, encouragement and partnership. Know that we will continue to work together to demonstrate the individual and collective strength, resilience and character that define Shelton.

DEVELOPMENT DOINGSTheresa Bruno, CFRE, Director of Development

We are honored to serve as Annual Fund Co-Chairs for the 2021-2022 school year. The Shelton community — our students, our faculty, our staff and our parents — have been remarkable in exhibiting flexibility and resilience during a global pandemic. This is a testament to the fortitude of Shelton.

In recognition of the strength of the Shelton spirit, we ask you to join us in supporting Shelton’s Annual Fund, “Leading the Way.” Each year our parents are asked to support Shelton’s mission with a donation to the Annual Fund. The Annual Fund ensures that Shelton can continue to provide outstanding academic programs, fantastic extracurricular opportunities, small class sizes and extraordinary teachers. Tuition only covers approximately 85 percent of the actual costs of education for a Shelton student. The Shelton Annual Fund provides the critical

financial support that helps to close the gap between tuition revenue and the true cost of operating the school.

This year’s Annual Fund has a goal of $950,000 and 100 percent parent participation. We ask each family to join us and show its support of Shelton. Together we can reach our goals and continue to build on Shelton’s rich legacy of supporting bright students who learn differently. Together we can continue to illustrate how Shelton is “Leading the Way.”

LEADING THE WAY…

Leading The Way… We do it every day here at Shelton. Together, we have navigated the uncertainties of a global pandemic and have continued to move forward successfully to provide the very best education for our students.

As I walk our beautiful new campus, I see the results firsthand. Our students lead the way in the classroom, on the field, onstage and in the community.

They have confidence and self-assurance because they are supported with an unmatched education tailored to their unique learning needs. They have access to innovative programs and enriched learning opportunities, thoughtfully engineered by Shelton’s amazing faculty and staff. And they have you — because you, too, play a role in engaging, enriching and empowering our Shelton students.

Throughout this edition of The Horizon, you will read about many accomplishments and how the Shelton community is engaged, successful and leading the way. Our students’ achievements are made possible by the generous support and involvement of the entire Shelton community, and we are

grateful for our supporters who believe in what we do and in what our students can accomplish.

By now, you have received information on this year’s Annual Fund “Leading the Way.” The Annual Fund helps shape our students’ future by focusing on what makes Shelton special today. Your gift is the first and most important way you can support Shelton students. We are grateful for our community who help us continue to lead the way for our students, families, faculty and staff. We encourage you to consider the opportunities you can provide Shelton students. Please visit www.shelton.org/support-shelton to make a gift or pledge online. We know you have many philanthropic choices, and we thank you for all that you do to make a difference for each and every Shelton student.

In the Annual Report of Gifts section of this Horizon, we recognize and acknowledge the gifts of our supporters and celebrate the generosity and giving spirit seen throughout the year. It is with deep gratitude that we express our sincere thanks to all the members of our Shelton community for their continued generosity, involvement and support. Thank you for helping us to Lead The Way for our talented students.

North Texas Giving Day – September 23, 2021Thanks to all our donors who supported Shelton on North Texas Giving Day. The event, sponsored by the Communities Foundation of Texas, was a wonderful way to kick off Shelton’s 2021-22 Annual Fund Drive — “Leading the Way.” This year, 259 donors generously contributed $135,000 to support Shelton. We are grateful for all who helped make this event a success.

4 MARCH 2022 THE HORIZON SHELTON SCHOOL

The mission of the Speech, Language & Hearing Center has long been to serve students and families, at Shelton and in the community alike, by providing thorough and informative screens, comprehensive speech and language evaluations, and, of course, speech therapy services of the highest quality. We could never begin to fulfill this mission without our team of experienced and caring clinicians. We are thankful for the opportunity to provide support to each student with unique learning needs. Our therapists have been thrilled to return to seeing students in person whether that is on our beautiful new Shelton campus or on the campuses of one of the many private schools in which we work. Our greatest goal is to help our clients realize success by giving them the tools to better communication!

Screening Program

Our Speech, Language, Reading, Hearing and Vision screening program also began to return with some precautions in place. Screening is one component that is vital to fulfilling our mission. Early intervention is critical not only for closing language learning gaps and providing a stable foundation upon which to build future language, but also for avoiding frustration and allowing a child to maintain self-esteem and confidence in his or her ability to communicate. Through the screening process, the Shelton Speech Center provides invaluable assistance to parents and educators by identifying young children with speech, language and reading delays. From individual conferences and professionally written results to recommendations for intervention, therapists in our center come alongside parents and teachers to support their children in a way that is unique to Shelton. For these reasons, The Shelton Speech Center is the gold standard in the Dallas area for Speech, Language, and Reading Screens.

Schools for whom we provide screenings:

The Hockaday School Trinity Christian AcademyParish Episcopal School Greenhill SchoolEpiscopal School of Dallas Stringfellow SchoolSt. Andrew United Methodist Arbor Creek Montessori Preschool St. John’s Episcopal SchoolMeadowbrook School The Lamplighter SchoolGuthrie School Prince of Peace Catholic SchoolThe DaVinci School

Screens begin in August and usually conclude in November. Upon conclusion each year, The Shelton Speech Center has screened approximately 1,600 children.

Therapy Services

The Speech Center completes approximately 155 therapy sessions every week. We provide private speech, language, reading and social communication therapy not only to Shelton students, EC to Upper School, but to students in private schools across the metroplex including Hockaday, Greenhill, Parish Episcopal, Episcopal of Dallas, Lamplighter School and Meadowbrook School. In addition, many community clients are seen on Shelton’s campus. Therapy is provided for receptive and expressive language, articulation, language and auditory processing, phonological awareness and reading difficulties, reading comprehension and social language. In addition, several of our therapists are trained in the multisensory reading methods that are used so successfully by Shelton School. Therapy is available year-round, Monday through Thursday, 7:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m.

Summer

Therapy doesn’t stop because it’s summer. The Shelton Speech Program continues to offer speech and language camps, as well as private therapy. Therapists, along with Speech Therapy graduate student interns from UTD and TWU, host kids of all ages in therapeutic camps that are both impactful and fun.Language Adventures, our intensive therapy program for children ages 2-6 with receptive and expressive language delays, has expanded from five to seven weeks. Each week language enriching activities are planned within a thematic framework, such as camping, sports, farm, space and community helpers.

iSocialize Camp targets social cognition and related social skills for elementary age children. This therapeutic group teaches the “why” behind social interaction including perspective taking, thinking about others, expected vs. unexpected behaviors, active listening and language for conversation.

New Therapists Join the Shelton Speech Center Team

The Shelton Speech Center is proud to announce the addition of two new therapists, Melissa Powell and Chelsea Maxey.

Chelsea received her BA degree from Saint Edward’s University in Austin in 2011. After teaching special education at KIPP Public Charter School in Charlotte, N.C., for two years, Chelsea returned to school to earn a Master of Science degree in Speech-Language Pathology at the University of North Texas. The last five and a half years have been spent practicing speech therapy serving toddlers, school-aged children and adults in a number of settings: hospitals, home health, private practice and schools.

Melissa is from Birmingham, Ala. She attended the University of Alabama for both her bachelor’s degree in Communicative Disorders and Child Development and for her Master of Science degree in Speech-Language Pathology. Melissa completed her clinical fellowship at Lakewood Elementary in Dallas, Texas, in 2016 and continued to work as the Speech-Language Pathologist on that campus for five additional years.

Speech, Language & Hearing Center Staff: Chelsea Maxey, Avie Nikolopoulos, Lauren Edwards, Krista Norwood, Lindsay Cobert, Stephanie Weatherford, Melissa Powell

This past year, we continued training teachers utilizing a synchronous training model via Zoom, in person in Shelton’s new training lab or on-site at the client’s school. Online training is here to stay as an option and has allowed us to provide opportunities to adult learners who would otherwise not have access to our training due to proximity or logistics.

Shelton offers three accredited teacher training courses for educators serving students with dyslexia, at both the Associate/Teaching and Therapy Levels.

1) Shelton Academic Language Approach (SALA/MTA, based on Margaret Taylor Smith’s Multisensory Training Approach), directed by Chris Bedenbaugh

2) Shelton Academic Reading Approach (SARA, based on Scottish Rite Hospital’s Take Flight curriculum), directed by Nancy Coffman

3) Sequential English Education (SEE), directed by Joyce Pickering

Each is accredited by the International Multisensory Structured Language Education Council (IMSLEC) and the International Dyslexia Association (IDA). This year, we trained 244 teachers using these three courses.

We continue to partner with Quantitative Research Evaluation & Measurement (QREM) for impact

studies on teachers trained through our MSLE courses. Says QREM President Didi Fahey, “As teachers trained by Shelton themselves often train, mentor or guide other teachers, the reach of Shelton training extends well beyond the number of teachers who actually attended Shelton courses.” A recent study cited the full reach of Shelton approaches at over 1 million students per year.

Currently Shelton has training cohorts in Alabama, Arkansas, Louisiana, Mississippi, Utah and Texas.

On Jan. 15, we hosted the Academic Language Therapy Association (ALTA) Regional Summit conference. Coordinated by Shelton’s G-g Shryer. There were 621 attendees.

Dr. Laure Ames, Director of Shelton’s Evaluation Center (see pg. 8), conducted a virtual Screening for Dyslexia workshop Feb. 5. Attendees were from California, Colorado, Wisconsin, Arkansas, Mississippi and Texas.

We continue to offer six workshops a year to new Shelton parents, also open to the public at no charge. Teachers may also attend and earn continuing education units (CEUs).

• Overview of Learning Differences

• Simulations of Learning Differences

• Social Skills/Organization and Study Skills

• Oral and Written Language: Decoding, Spelling, Comprehension and Composition

• Freedom from Chemical Dependency

• Math, Science and Social Studies

On Feb. 5, we were pleased to be a sponsor of the virtual Dallas Branch IDA Regional Conference, Deeper Than Words.

Patricia Gallaher and Jennifer Drake are coordinating Summer, the Shelton Way to be held in June.

OUTREACH OFFERINGSChristine Bedenbaugh, MAE, LDT, CALT, QI, Director Shelton Outreach/Training

SHELTON OUTREACH IS EVERYWHEREJoyce S. Pickering, Hum.D., Shelton Executive Director Emerita

Dr. Joyce Pickering, Shelton’s Executive Director Emerita, has been able to reach more teachers, administrators and schools this year with more virtual trainings and conference appearances. Dr. Pickering directs the Multisensory Structured Language Education (MSLE) courses in Sequential English Education (SEE) and co-directs Shelton Montessori Training (SMT). She is also a SEE Instructor, Montessori Instructor and presenter of workshops and conferences worldwide.

We, like many others, made a major shift in delivering our training services to an online model. It has been a challenge, but the silver lining is that recording our trainings makes it possible to offer our courses anytime, anywhere. We have some in-person trainings, but we have found the adult learners appreciate a hybrid model of teaching which enables Shelton to reach more teachers and students. Shelton Outreach is still worldwide.

MSLE - SEE Training

Usually this office provides one to two training sessions in SEE per year, but this year we have given six. Twenty-one SEE teaching level trainees have graduated and have been certified. Five SEE Therapy Level graduates have been certified.

Jessica Newman has joined Outreach as Director of Shelton’s Scholars program. Scholars provides remediation at a reasonable cost to children who cannot attend a full-time school like Shelton. This program is offered to the Dallas metroplex community every Fall, Summer and Spring. Jessica also is a SEE Instructor and coordinates the Association Method trainings at Shelton.

Danyle Duke is the Coordinator of SEE Training and a SEE Teaching Level Instructor. She has been instrumental in revising the SEE manuals the past two years. In her duties as SEE Coordinator, Danyle manages all the records of SEE trainees, observes trainees in their practicum, assigns trainee mentors and markets the training courses.

Our training and collaboration with ASPIRE (formerly LIFT) for Adult Literacy in Dallas continues. SEE training will continue at the May Center in Santa Fe, N.M., and at The Bridgemark School in Tyler, Texas. A project to offer SEE training in Mississippi is underway with John Hodges as the Director of the North Mississippi Literacy Project. Thanks to a gift of almost $1 million from Bob and Carol Dorsey, 120 teachers have been trained and 2,100 students from Preschool through Grade 2 will be reached through this new program.

Montessori Training

Gulzar Babool is Co-Director of SMT, along with Dr. Pickering. This year we have received the American Montessori Society (AMS) Affiliation for the Montessori Administrator program. Dallas ISD has designated our training center for their educators to become AMS certified; we have an Early Childhood DISD cohort and an Elementary I-II DISD cohort. We have also started our third cohort for MIE, which includes an educator from the Czech Republic. Currently, we have 96 educators doing Montessori coursework and/or practicum, and we have 14 Montessori Instructors teaching our courses.

In response to the pandemic, SMT pivoted effectively in creating virtual Montessori courses and now we are back in-person for our training. Our Training Classroom has 18 shelves prepared with Montessori works starting in Practical Life all the way to Elementary II Math. With the extensive growth in our Montessori training programs, Candace Collier has joined the team as a Montessori Associate to support efforts on all fronts. This includes photography of sessions, video coverage and gathering feedback. She will strengthen our social media presence, overall marketing approach, and provide exceptional customer service to our educators and instructors. Join us on Instagram where we have over 500 followers!

Gulzar has conducted professional development sessions for Fort Worth ISD, Garland ISD and Dallas ISD. She even traveled to Denali Montessori School in Alaska for a teacher in-service day. Gulzar and Cathy Luby continue to conduct virtual field visits to support our educators during these uncertain times. SMT carries on, meeting the needs of our adult learners and school administrators to provide them with continuous support.

MACAR

Montessori Applied to Children at Risk for Learning Differences (MACAR) has been offered at Shelton for more than 25 years. In the 2020-21 school year 29 teachers and administrators attended the beginning course virtually including two teachers from the Czech Republic. We also had six teachers attend the advanced course virtually, including one teacher from Nigeria. We look forward to offering both the Beginning and Advanced courses again this summer.

Joyce and Gulzar presented the MACAR course to students at Trine University in Indiana. They also presented Preparing Montessori Schools for Children with Learning Differences virtually to a Montessori Conference in the Czech Republic and a Montessori Conference in Sweden.

Short-Term Workshops

Many of our short-term workshops this year were offered virtually allowing us to save money for the host schools by eliminating travel and lodging for our instructors. These workshops were presented for groups in Fort Smith, Ark., Minneapolis, Minn., and St. Louis, Mo. Pam Brockway manages appointments, travel and record-keeping for Outreach staff.

Shelton Outreach continues to serve students and teachers in the Dallas area and to provide information and training internationally in the unique Shelton Way.

Evaluation Center Staff

The Shelton Evaluation Center (SEC) has had another busy year and our staff has worked with clients from Louisiana, Arizona, Oklahoma, Arkansas, Tennessee and Texas. Our goal when conducting an evaluation is to obtain a comprehensive picture of the client’s functioning so that we can make appropriate recommendations for intervention and accommodation. Although our primary evaluations are psychoeducational and assess problems with learning, many of our clients come back for a second day of testing to assess for Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD).

ASD is not a learning disorder. It is a very broad developmental disorder that is neurological in nature. New statistics indicate that 1 in 44 children are diagnosed with ASD, a rate that has increased significantly. People on the autism spectrum are in every classroom and every workplace. Some are diagnosed, and some are not. Higher functioning people may not fully manifest symptoms until adolescence or beyond when social demands exceed their more limited capacities. People diagnosed with ASD range from engineers, computer programmers and physicians to individuals who will always have to live in an assisted living situation. ASD affects four areas of functioning: language/communication, social skills, sensory systems and behavior. According to the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual-Fifth Edition, (DSM-5), the diagnostic criteria for diagnosing ASD (either currently or by history) includes: deficits in social-emotional reciprocity, deficits in nonverbal communication, deficits in developing and keeping and understanding relationships, stereotyped or repetitive movements or speech, inflexibility and insistence on sameness, restricted and fixated interest and hyper- or hypo-reactivity to sensory input. To make a diagnosis, symptoms must cause clinically

significant impairment in social, occupational or other areas of current functioning.

A comprehensive evaluation is done at the SEC to diagnose ASD and is usually done in conjunction with a psychoeducational evaluation that assesses cognitive ability, attention and academics. Measures would include a combination of: Clinical Interview, Autism Diagnostic Observation Schedule- Second Edition (ADOS-2), Autism Spectrum Rating Scales (ASRS), Childhood Autism Rating Scale-Second Edition (CARS-2), Social Responsiveness Scale-Second Edition (SRS-2), Autism Diagnostic Interview, Revised (ADI-R) and the Social Language Development Test. Measures of anxiety and depression may also be included.

Early recognition and diagnosis of children with ASD is essential because behavioral and educational interventions can improve the prognosis, especially for peer interactions and the development of language. Identifying the disorder and engaging in appropriate interventions can help a family to cope better; not knowing the child’s diagnosis increases parental anxiety and delays interventions that can reduce behavioral, emotional and social problems.

The Shelton Evaluation Center is unique in the Dallas area because our staff is experienced in offering multiple kinds of evaluations and integrating the information from these different evaluations to make targeted recommendations and referrals.

Please call 972.774.1772, Ext. 2244, if you have any questions about the services we offer at the Shelton Evaluation Center.

“You and the Evaluation Center were the answer to my prayers. It’s a huge relief to know how to help my child moving forward, after three years exhausting everything I knew how to do.” Shelton Evaluation Center Client (Parent)

FROM THE ASSOCIATE HEADS OF SCHOOL

The Shelton School Wellness Program

We are excited to announce the launch of our school-wide Wellness Program. This program has been a long-time goal of Executive Director Suzanne Stell, who has seen the project come to fruition with the help of a generous grant from the Moody Foundation and the partnership of Rusty Lozano, M.Ed, LPC, BCIAC, IMC, Director of the Center for Biofeedback and Behavior Therapy, LLC.

The Shelton Wellness Program is a specialized intervention program for students, teachers and parents and is designed to educate, alleviate and combat stress and the effects of stress on a physical, mental, emotional, physiological and behavioral level. The first phase of the program involves our students, starting with the Lower School. Future phases will target teachers, staff and parents. Shelton is keenly aware of the importance of mental health and social well-being. We want our community to be

resilient — to have the skills needed to handle stress, relate to others and make healthy choices.

The Shelton Wellness Program includes classroom training and clinical programs in the areas of: Cognitive Behavioral Therapy, Biofeedback, University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center’s “Youth Aware of Mental Health” (YAM), Expressive Arts, PsychoDrama, Music,

Animal Assisted Therapy, Mindfulness, Puppet Theater, Exercise and Fitness and Horses and Humans. Activities and content will be adjusted to the age and stage of the students.

Program goals include:

• Improving self awareness and self regulation

• Relieving social and separation anxiety

• Developing coping skills

• Improving emotional expression through play and art

• Recognizing and relieving stress

• Improving flexible thinking

The program has currently launched the “Coping Skills Training” phase, which has two parts: Black Box Skits and Lab Training. Black Box Skits are unique group seminars that are designed to introduce different concepts of stress and stress control. Atmospheric lights, therapy animals, audience participation and other special effects (such as electronic dance music, puppets and props) create a visually and auditory appealing show. “The kids are having a blast,” Rusty Lozano says. “The shows are very cutting edge and interactive. We’ve created an ambience where the children are learning through audience participation and examples demonstrated through their peers, which make the lessons memorable and very entertaining.” Lab Training is designed to train relaxation techniques using technology. The students are assigned a laptop and a heart rate monitor. The heart rate monitor is a pulsometer sensor that gently clips onto the student’s ear lobe and can detect stress via heart rate. The heart rate program (emwave.com) interface is

user friendly and easy to use. The program color-codes various stress states in the body. Red means stress, blue means relaxed, green means very relaxed. “The feedback is immediate and clear,” Lozano says. “If a student utilizes a relaxation strategy and relaxation is achieved, their efforts are immediately reinforced by a bright color-coded LED on the heart monitor unit followed by an indicator chime from their laptop and color-coded box display on their computer screen. The performance results are communicated to the user loud and clear.” The students are introduced to breathing and body strategies designed to promote relaxation. “Mindfulness concepts are then tied in to help students recognize the various sensations in the body associated with stress,” he says. This spring, third-fifth grade students will participate in the “Horses and Humans” equine assisted therapy program on campus. Students will interact with horses and develop essential skills, such as an appreciation of nature, situational awareness, concentration, balance, motor-skill enhancement, verbal and non-verbal communication, empathy, relaxation, core strength, teamwork, self-esteem, confidence and leadership.

The Shelton Wellness Program was created and developed using proven and accepted treatment modalities in accordance with the American Psychological Association (APA) and the American Counseling Association (ACA).

UPPER ELEMENTARY NEWS

Rangoli Sand Art

Students learned to make sand art (rangoli) in celebration of the holiday Diwali. They utilized the technique learned from this experience to decorate homemade picture frames as thank-you gifts to the grandparents who visited during Grandparents’ Day.

Recognizing Reading

Upper Elementary celebrated Bluebonnet Reading Challenge. Participants kicked off Learning Ally’s Great Reading Games with a Read & Feed.

Veterans Day Salute

Upper Elementary and Lower School students recognized Veterans Day Nov. 11. The program featured “What is a Veteran?” — a thank you to Shelton staff members who are veterans and the playing of Taps for fallen veterans.

Woodworking

Students used various tools such as Dremel and drill and hand saws to work on various wood projects, including chess pieces, robots and Tic-Tac-Toe boards.

Upper Elementary Comes Together

Everything is better together in Upper Elementary. The Togetherness Picnic is an annual event. For two weeks, students took turns reading a quote about what togetherness means to them. The project culminated with a togetherness chain made by linking their favorite quotes. These weeks of thinking about what it means to be “together” ended at Togetherness Day. The event included students enjoying team-building games and singing the school song. Congratulations to Tricia Harden’s advisory for winning the Togetherness Tug of War.

Knot-tying

Students learned how to tie a variety of knots, including the overhand knot, square knot and figure-eight knot.

Paper Crafts

Students engaged in a variety of paper-folding projects, including fans, boats and lantern-making.

Chess

Upper Elementary students learned and practiced chess.

MIDDLE SCHOOL NEWS

Middle School has enjoyed a successful semester with 340 students. In our division there is always something to celebrate!

Art

In Art, students brainstormed things that “Go Together” for a clay sculpture project. Mac and Cheese, Milk and Cookies, Burger and Fries were just a few of the sculptures created by our talented artists.

Drama

“Curtain Up — Light the Lights.” Middle School students enjoy a drama production 16 times a year. Our hands-on approach to drama gives our students the opportunity to learn to work as

a group, practice their social skills in action and stretch themselves in ways they never thought possible. From the beginning audition to the final bow, a drama class at Shelton introduces students to the work of a theatrical production. Our Fine Arts faculty knows that the process of making art is every bit as important as the final project.

Life Hacks

This is the second year for our seventh- and eighth-graders to participate in Life Hacks — a practical, fun and confidence-building class modeled after the Home Ec. class of days gone by. Students are taught essential skills they will need throughout life: personality types, reading body language, first impressions, basic cooking, composting and gardening, sewing and changing a tire, to name a few. In the sewing unit, seventh-grade students learned basic hand sewing techniques to

sew a stuffed animal and eighth-grade students learned how to use a sewing machine to make their own pj shorts or pants. Afterwards both classes got to show off their creations. In another unit, Park Place Lexus sent one of their expert technicians to show students how to change a tire. The goal is to help our students feel they are capable of handling the day-to-day skills needed in life outside of school.

Sports

Middle School Athletics has expanded this year to include 151 students who have participated in sports. This includes cheerleading, volleyball, football, cross country and basketball. For the first time, we have been able to offer additional teams that practice at Sportsplex and have their games on the weekend. The goal is to provide opportunities for our students to get involved and engaged with a sport. In the spring, our students will gear up for tennis, golf, baseball and track and field.

STEM

Middle School STEM is an interactive way for students to show their creativity and grow their critical thinking mindset. The STEM lab has 3D printers and we use Tinkercad, a 3D design program, that allows students to create a variety of objects from phone

stands to scale models. Students also have “Engineering Build It Challenges” where they create things like slingshot cars, bow and arrows, scale model bridges, catapults and hydraulic hands. We use the engineering design process to brainstorm, design, test, redesign and retest until students have their final product.

Vocal Music

Shelton Sings! Vocal music thrives at Shelton. Vocal music elective classes focusing on musical theater and pop genres have been extremely successful. At the end of the first quarter, sixth and seventh grade classes did our first vocal showcases for parents at our new campus. Shelton Singers Honor Choir performed at Grandparents’ Day in November along with elementary and high school choirs. We were also able to create a special combined middle and high school choir to sing at the memorial service for student Will Holmes. Shelton Singer Honor Choir performed a fantastic fall concert, followed by second quarter showcase performances by sixth, seventh and eighth grade vocal music classes.

Our vocal music program is flourishing thanks to our beautiful new choir room located in the Moody Fine Arts Center. Special thanks to the Shelton Parents’ Association for gifting a wonderful new piano and seated risers to make the choir room complete.

OFF THE SHELF LIBRARY UPDATEKelli Yonker, Library Media Coordinator

The Shelton librarians are passionate about books, research, literacy and technology. This year we supported student literacy and research skills by collaborating with classroom teachers to meet curriculum and instructional needs while fostering community and connections across grades and interests. Middle School and Upper School libraries were filled throughout the year with students finding great books, practicing research methods and learning digital citizenship skills. Librarians also

hosted professional development sessions for teachers to share databases, new programs and technology strategies. In order to support the development of multiple literacies, we acquired Learning Ally, which is a technology platform with more than 80,000 audio textbooks, literature and popular fiction titles. These titles provide access to grade-level materials for our students who have learning disabilities and may require a reading accommodation.

Books Bring Us Together

This year’s book fair was held during parent conferences from Oct. 12-23. It was a huge success, as we sold more than $27,000 in books. This meant we put more than 4,300 books in our students’ hands. Many parents enjoyed lunch or breakfast with their child while browsing for books. Thanks to all of the volunteers who helped make the events run smoothly. We enjoyed seeing everyone in person. The Shelton librarians appreciate you encouraging the love of reading.

Reading Events

Students across divisions participated in reading programs throughout the year with reward incentives such as popsicles, yogurt and a free book of the student’s choice. More than 1,100 students completed the programs while reading a total of 750 books.

The Technology Team continues to support Shelton’s four entities — School, Evaluation Center, Speech/Language/Hearing Center and Outreach & Training. The team moved to the Preston campus in July 2020 in preparation for the school’s opening in August. We wore hard hats and steel-toed shoes daily working side-by-side with cablers, installers and network engineers to ensure that plans were implemented on time and done correctly. Knowing that concurrent on- and off-campus learning would take place during the 2020-2021 school year, it was critical that a strong, dependable and adaptable network be in place on the first day of school. The task was challenging, but ultimately rewarding as students and teachers successfully navigated blended learning with few network hiccups.

To support blended learning, a Mevo Camera was deployed to every classroom as well as an Interactive Flat Panel (i.e. SmartBoard). In addition, an iPad was given to every teacher. These technologies allowed learners — whether home by choice or because of quarantine — to participate in class in real time. As a result of Shelton’s successful implementation of the Mevo Cameras, we were asked to participate in a case study. Several teachers were showcased demonstrating their creative use of the Mevo and iPad.

COMMUNITY CONNECTIONS BEYOND THE CAMPUS

Supporting Afghan Refugees

Third-grader Claire McGehearty befriended 5-year-old Bushra of Afghanistan by sending videos of herself reading books. Claire started making videos for Bushra when Bushra’s family was hiding in a safe house in Afghanistan and waiting to be rescued. Bushra is the child of the family that the McGehearty family rescued. Eric McGehearty’s company Globe Runner partnered with a Dallas nonprofit to help give virtual employment to the people of Afghanistan, including Bushra’s father, by building sustainable small businesses there. “There were days when we did not hear from the family and we were worried about their safety,” says Claire’s mother, Heather. “They were at a safe house for a month and could not go outside much. During that time Claire started making videos.” Bushra and Claire met face-to-face when Bushra’s family arrived in Dallas.

Building Homes for the Needy in Costa Rica

For the last seven years, fifth-grader Robert Francis and his family have joined Youth With a Mission to build homes for a family in need in Pavas, a small, poor village about 15 minutes outside of San Jose,

Costa Rica. Robert recently gave a presentation to his class, educating others about his experience. “These children are really living a hard life, but the kids in Pavas are so happy when even the smallest of things are given to them,” he says. “Seeing how grateful they are is the highlight of my year. It makes me feel so happy to help someone who needs it.”

Happy Birthday, Maria Montessori

Students and staff celebrated Maria Montessori’s birthday Aug. 31. Shelton’s founder June Shelton was a Montessorian and the goals of Shelton were defined by the tenets of Montessori: respect, individualization, observe and nurture the potential. These and others are the foundation of who we are at Shelton.

Inspiring Words at Staff Meeting

“Be the bearers of hope in this difficult time.” That was the advice from Dr. Michael Sorrell, President of Paul Quinn

College, when he spoke to staff Aug. 18. Dr. Sorrell is one of the most decorated college presidents in America and is the longest serving president of Paul Quinn in its 148-year history. He spoke about teachers’ unique role. “We got into education because we believe in its transformational power,” he said. “We believe in leaving places better than we found them. That is the essence of education. Every day we teach students something that leaves them better than they were.”

Shelton’s 2021 Staff Holiday PartyThe staff enjoyed treats, beverages and tunes spun by our favorite DJ, Ken Utz. Executive Director Suzanne Stell thanked the staff for organizing Grandparents’ Day, LS Holiday Parade and Will Holmes’s Memorial Service as well as for the work done in Admissions, Outreach & Training, Speech/Language/Hearing Center and the Shelton Evaluation Center. Coach Chuck Locke entertained the staff with his witty poem. Shelton staff members were thankful for the extra days off (Jan. 3 and May 31) and for the generous Holiday Happiness Fund from our parents. Parents donated more than $100,000 to the Holiday Happiness Fund, which was chaired by Kimbers Bogard. “It’s a testament to how awesome each and every one of you are,” SPA Co-President Emily Sarche told the staff.

SPA Lineup of Activities

Beginning with a term of office in Summer 2021, the SPA officers and volunteers planned for back to “pre-pandemic normal” SPA events. The goal of SPA for 2021-2022 is to invigorate the connections that families and friends have missed over the last two years because of the pandemic.

The school year kicked off with back-to-school parties. The first in person SPA meeting in two years was well attended with both new and longtime parents. This opportunity allowed parents to connect and get involved. This was particularly needed after virtual learning and for families who joined the school over the past two years.

2021 activities have included:

• The annual Sky Ranch weekend, reimagined by the Dad’s Group Co-Chairs Tyson Harmon (Holt, seventh grade) and John Lynch (Rowan, seventh grade, and Barrett, second grade). It was planned as a day event rather than overnight to keep families safe. Plenty of fun was had by all!

• Weekly e-communication of SPA activities through The Scoop, posted by Corrie Shores (Cooper, fifth grade) kept families up to date.

• Grade liaisons planned events for parents and classmates to connect.

• Students enjoyed food trucks on campus, including Kona Ice and Chick-Fil-A. Chick-Fil-A and Tongue In Cheek food trucks are planned for the spring.

• This year teachers received record contributions to the Holiday Happiness fund sending 2021 off with a bang.

• Dad’s dinner, planned by the Dad’s Group Co-Chairs, included BBQ smoked by resident BBQ master, John Lynch.

Keeping up with the 1,199 Shelton graduated alumni, plus the hundreds of Shelton exes, spread out all over the planet is a privilege. A record number of alumni attended our Homecoming game Oct. 1 and toured our new campus. Watch for spring and summer reunion plans and stay connected by joining the June Shelton Alumni Facebook page or going to the alumni page on Shelton.org.

With more than 25 years at Shelton, I have observed more than a few students and parents ask, “Will college be an option?” Many students have walked through our doors with their heads down, no smile on their faces and their futures

unsure. To watch these students years later walk out our doors into colleges, universities, the Armed Forces or the job force is the best part of my job. Director of College and Career Advising Debbie Knox has put smiles on students’ faces since her first day at Shelton and that is a trend we can all be proud of.

Upper School and eighth-grade students benefited from Alumni Day Jan. 6. Special thanks to the Shelton alumni who participated in the College Panel for our US students and the class chats with our eighth-graders. GRANDPARENTS’ DAY

Shelton School hosted its annual Grandparents’ Day in November. Always a popular event for students and staff, the day is scheduled prior to the long Thanksgiving holiday, when many visiting grandparents from out of town can share in the festivities. A spillover crowd of over 1,000 guests attended.

Entertainment featured all Shelton choirs, Upper Elementary music students, all cheer groups, the drumline and the Chargerettes. Stage and technical crews were student-led under the direction of Clay Houston.

Grandparents attended classes with their grandchildren. They met teachers and learned firsthand about the daily studies and activities of their grandchildren.

Shelton’s Parents’ Association coordinated the special day.

The Return on the Investment: Successful Shelton Students

We are grateful for all Shelton supporters and donors.Through the generous gifts of many, we are able to provide a fine educational model to many students. Donors may wonder about the return on their investment. We witness the return on their investment every day — in the young student who gains self-esteem, the teen who learns team spirit, the parents whose child no longer struggles but thrives, and the graduate who confidently leaves Shelton to become a citizen of the world. We celebrate the return on our donors’ investments with gratitude.

Thank you from Shelton’s 2020-2021 Annual Fund Co-Chairs

It has been a pleasure to serve as this past year’s Annual Fund Parent Co-Chairs. We were honored to serve as Co-Chairs and owe our success to the commitment of our entire community who help Shelton achieve their mission of teaching students who learn differently.

The Shelton community generously donated over $1 million to the 2020-21 Annual Fund “New Horizons….Endless Opportunities”. Not only did we move to a new campus during a pandemic, but we surpassed our goal of $950,000. We are so grateful to the entire Shelton community for their generous support of this vital fundraising effort that benefits all our students.

All funds donated to the Annual Fund benefit every student at Shelton. Your support made it possible for our students to continue learning and engaging in a variety of extraordinary learning opportunities. Every day they continue to be engaged, enriched and empowered with the help of Shelton’s dedicated faculty and staff.

On behalf of the entire Shelton community, we express our deepest appreciation for each and every supporter. Thank you for helping ensure that our Shelton students continue to have “New Horizons and Endless Opportunities.” every day.

Sincerely,Holly Vitullo and Jessica Slaven

We ended school year 2019/2020, began 2020/2021 in the world of COVID-19, and in the middle, we made a monumental move to our new campus. I look forward to a time, in the near future, when we can truly enjoy our new home all together at one time.

Please know, the entire board salutes and supports you and thanks you for making Shelton the great school we are today!
