•Space Mysteries- NASA LEARNERS projectSpace Mysteries are 3 inquiry-driven interactive Web explorations, which take advantage of the

student's natural curiosity to build critical thinking and analytical skills.

NASA E/PO Programs at SSU

•GLAST-Gamma-ray Large Area Space TelescopeThe Gamma-Ray Large Area Space Telescope (GLAST) is an international and multi-agency mission planned for launch in 2006. It will study the cosmos looking at objects

that emit high energy wavelengths of light.

•XMM-Newton Education and Public Outreach • XMM-Newton is a joint NASA-European Space Agency (ESA) orbiting observatory, designed to take observe high energy X-rays from exotic astronomical objects such as pulsars, black holes and active galaxies. Launched on December 10, 1999, it continues to make observations today.

Alien Bandstand

– A recording executive looking for his next big hit has turned to the heavens. He has found a peculiar signal in some radio telescope data and he is convinced that it is music from an alien civilization. He is offering it for sale.

– Your mission: Determine if this signal really is an alien tune!

Page 5: - 1 Dr. Lynn Cominsky Director NASA Education and Public Outreach At Sonoma State University.

- 5

Alien Bandstand - concepts

Wavelength – distance between two crests or troughs in a wave in space

Period – time it takes for 1 wave to pass by

Period is also thedistance between two crests or troughs in time

Live! From 2-Alpha

Live! From 2-Alpha

– A space-faring reporter is stranded on the planet 2-Alpha. He starts noticing strange events in the sky and on the planet.

– Your mission: Determine what is happening and what course of action he must take to survive.

Star Market

– Companies are buying stars of various types for unexpectedly high prices

– Your mission: Determine what type of stars they are buying and why.
