Visiting the Farm A bout a month

ago, we went out to Crystal Lake to visit my in-laws. We went out to brunch and my father in law had a pleasant surprise for us afterwards.

He had planned for us to go to his friend’s farm after brunch. Initially, I was not very excited to go. I’m not what you would consider outdoorsy. but I agreed and planned in my head to stay for only a few minutes.

What I thought would be a brief visit turned out to be a 45 minute experience. As soon as we got there we parked our car right next to the goats. We got out of the car, and there was feed for the goats.

My father-in-law placed the feed in Finn’s hand and fearlessly placed his hand through the fence. The goats immediately began licking the feed off of Finn’s hand. He was not at all scared and actually loved the experience. He was laughing because it tickled.

Finn kept grabbing more feed to repeat the feeding of the goats. After 5 or 6 times, my father-in-law said, “Now let’s go see the chickens.”

We went to the chicken coop and walked up these stairs so that we could look over the fence that keeps the chickens from escaping. Then, farmer Schmidt handed us some Saltines to feed the chickens.

You’d throw a cracker to one corner, and about 20 of them would run to fight for the piece. Then, you’d throw it to the opposite corner and they would all run to that corner.

It was very cool.

Then we went to see the turkeys. I never realized it. but turkeys are huge. And pretty ugly. They have this big red wattle that is constantly flapping. Finn would yell, “Gobble, gobble, gobble!” Then the turkeys would begin to gobble back to him. He loved that he had the ability to control when they would gobble.

After that we went to play on the old farm equipment. These old tractors are still functional, and Farmer Schmidt still uses them on the farm.

I really appreciated that we got the chance to tour the Schmidt family farm. It was really fun to see how excited my son was about the animals and equipment. Also, I completely appreciate the hard work that is required to maintain and the upkeep a farm.

Thanks for the tour.

YOUR MOUTH CAN HIDE A SECRET....

How many little sores do we find in the mouth? More often than you think. Most of the time they go away. But sometimes our mouths keep secrets. That’s why we use the Velscope Vx with your printed results.

The Velscope Vx is painless, and helps us identify oral disease, in most cases in its early stages. Early detection is the key to helping diagnosing any pre-cancerous/cancerous lesions.

Risk Factors: * Tobacco smoking/chewing.* Long term alcohol use.* HPV (Human Papilloma Virus)* Excessive habits such as biting/chewing cheeks.

The Velscope’s blue light (Fluorescence Visualization) is non-invasive,but allows the Dental professional to see any abnormalities in the mouth and surroundingstructures not visible with the naked eye. Your results are printed and given to you to keep.

Our office is proud to provide the most advanced standards of care available to our patients.

Visiting the Farm, continuedA Frightening Night In BucktownOn October 20th, 2015, Mark Gill’s life changed forever. He was walking toward his car as he always did through the alley just behind Feast Restaurant on Damen.

He always parked his car on Concord Place because the parking was free on that street. The parking spot was in front of Northside’s Tavern. And on that particular night, many people were out watching Monday Night Football. The neighborhood was packed with people.

Mark was just leaving the gym and walking towards his car. He was carrying two bags, and was texting while he was walking.

Right when he got behind Feast, he noticed some people yelling. They were saying things like “hey you stop!” He did not think they were yelling at him so he continued to walk. He was at his car with his keys in his hand when a woman began to grab at his bags and at his phone. It totally caught him off guard. Then he turned around and got shot in the left eye.

The bullet traveled up his eyelid and got embedded in his cheekbone. He was rushed to Illinois Masonic Hospital where Dr. Osvaldo Lopez operated on him to remove the bullet. They were not sure if they would be able to keep his eye because of the significant damage the bullet had done. Luckily, his eye was saved, but his vision in that eye was not.

There were 3 assailants; 2 women and one man. One of the women owned the car and was the driver. The other woman was the person who initially attacked him, trying to take his backpacks and phone. The man was the person who shot Mark when he turned around trying to escape the initial attack.

The police were able to locate the assailants. When the attack was happening, ,the getaway driver was in the alley waiting in the car. There were security cameras in the alley, and those cameras captured the driver’s license plates. Once they identified the driver, she turned in everyone else.

The driver was a Loyola University student and the other assailants were her high school friends.

On the night of Mark’s attack, they had attempted to mug two other people in two different incidents but were unsuccessful. Each incident became progressively more violent. They did not hurt the first person they tried to rob. They pistol whipped the second victim. And, they shot Mark.

All three assailants were indicted. Two of them were sentenced and are serving their time. The driver won’t be serve her sentence until January of 2018 because the judge wanted her to finish college.

When I asked Mark why he wanted me to share this story, he said that he didn’t want anyone to go through what he did. He wants everyone to be aware of their surroundings. Even if there are a lot of people around, those people won’t be able to do much.

When you’re walking put the phone away and walk with purpose. Notice everyone around you. I am so happy Mark is healthy, and I am very grateful that he shared his story with all of us.
