Trinity Star #650Order of the Eastern Star
Weaverville, California
As I sit here at my computer, I am thankful that the members of Trinity Star who live in Junc-tion City are all safe, and able to return to their homes. Our three members fortunately had homes to come home to. And the fire is currently burning away from homes and villages. The highway has also opened. Our October meeting will be Michael and my fi-nal hurrah! October means elections. Our meeting will be on October 5th, due to Grand Chapter later in the month. We will be using the Theme of “Hal-loween meets Election”. So, we hope that we will have a great turnout, by members and friends. If all has gone well at our September meet-ing we will have given out our longevity and other awards. If not, they will be coming later. And we may even have a new petition to accept. As we wind down, we are anxious to find out about Laird’s Installation which should be held ear-ly in November on the 4th. And we are all looking forward to our 2018 Grand Year. Just a little news I wanted to share with you. While watching a San Francisco Giants game the other night, a photo was shown of the Masons of Northern California making a presentation at the game. For the last 7 or 8 years the Masons of Cali-fornia have been making these donations at the games in San Diego, Los Angeles and San Fran-cisco. In San Francisco the donation goes to the Jr. Giants Foundation which supports Little League teams throughout the North State. The amount given to the Giants was $81,000. Over the years the total investment made to the young people of
California comes to more the $610,000. Congratu-lations to the Masons and thank you for what you do for our youth. We wish you all to have a great end to your 2017 year and will experience a terrific 2018 in the work of Eastern Star. Soaring Eagles and Crouching Lions wish you well in your future.
Michael Millard and Kathy Smith
A FOND FAREWELL TOFIDELITY CHAPTER
MEMBERSSadly, because of budgetary matters, Fidelity Chap-ter has withdrawn its support as one of the sponsor-ing organizations of the TEMPLES TRESTLE-BOARD. This issue of the magazine is the last that will be sent to all their members at no charge.
We have valued their participation as well as their input on a monthly basis for so many years and we wish the Chapter well in its efforts to keep their membership informed.
While their articles from the Worthy Matron will no longer appear in the magazine some of their mem-bers who wish to stay informed about the Masonic happenings in the valley may still subscribe to the magazine on a yearly basis. Members will find sub-scription prices on the upper left corner of page 3 of this issue.
We sincerely hope that in future years, Fidelity will be able to rejoin one of the finest multi-district Trestleboards in the jurisdiction.

The second degree preamble has a curious phrase. “Though I speak with the tongues of men and angels and have not charity I am become as sounding brass or a tinkling symbol.” Vitruvius once talked about the Dionysian Ar-chitects of the Ionic Period who were a stone ma-son guild that were the first builders of theaters. They specialized in building structures with spe-cifically designed acoustic properties. They could make a man’s voice amplify a hundred times or be so quiet the loudest yell was but a whisper depend-ing on where you stood in the room. They further amplified these effects with brass vases placed at calculated positions. In the mystery schools of this era the priest would take a blindfolded candidate through a temple and, depending on where they stood, the candidate’s softest voice would become as sounding brass or his loudest yell a tinkling symbol.

TILER’S DUTIESThe Tyler of a Masonic Lodge is an appointed officer of the Lodge and is sometimes known as the “Outer Guard”. He sits outside the closed door of the lodge room, armed with a sword. The Tyler’s duties and principle role is to ensure that only those who are duly qualified are allowed to enter the Lodge Room. His Jewel of Office is the Sword, by which he symboli-cally refuses entrance to anyone who is uninitiated in the Craft. The sword has no scabbard, as it is his symbolic duty to always have his sword drawn, ready for the defense of his post. He guards against cowans and eavesdroppers. During the Middle Ages, a cowan was a man who built stone walls of poor quality. He was an uninitiated or nonapprenticed stonemason... a “jackleg”, if you will. While the Tyler is sometimes called upon to assist in the preparation of candidates, his chief duty is to (symbolically) keep unskilled workmen from overhearing the conversation within the Lodge Room. After the lodge members are inside the Lodge Room, the door closes and it is the Tyler’s duty to decide whether late arrivals may enter. It is also his duty to make sure that each visitor is “prop-erly clothed”, which means they must be wearing their Masonic apron. To be fully and properly dressed before entrance into the Lodge Room, the visitor must be wearing their apron over the top (or on the outside) of their suit coat (never under their coat) and the apron strings must be fully tied before the Tyler will allow the visitor entrance. Some jurisdictions call this posi-tion the Outer Guard.

Greetings Nobles, There is a chill in the air up here in the mountains as fall is arriving. We had a great turnout for the annual In-termountain Fair Parade held on Sun-day July 3rd in McArthur. We had 3 ve-hicles in the parade this year all deco-rated with club or Shrine Hospital signs. Leading off was Noble Gene Asher in his classic 1978 Cadillac Coupe de Ville, fol-lowed by Noble Walt and President Don Smith in Walt’s F-150. Last but not least were 4 dedicated Nobles from the Nor-Cal Shrine Club in the Shrine Hospital Transportation van. We certainly appre-ciate the support that we receive from NorCal up here in the hills! Thank You Nobles for all that you do. In an attempt to bribe the parade judges, President
Smith stopped at the reviewing stand and handed out roses to the judges along with Shrine Hospital information cards Our booth at the fair with information about Shriners and Shrine Hospitals also received a lot of attention. The Sacramento Shrine Hospital sent up
a considerable amount of informa-tion and handouts, almost all of which was given out. With the end of summer, a lot of our members will be traveling next month, so we decided to skip our October meeting since none of the officers were going to be there anyway.

Well, here we are at the end of our term and what an exciting year it has been. We changed meeting lo-cations, received several new members, and finished the year with our Mother (Lenore Grant) going to Texas and getting caught in Hurricane Harvey. We would like to thank our officers and the many substitutes we’ve had this year for all their support of our chapter. Our October 6th meeting will be our farewell and election of officers. Remember if you are running for an elected office your name, title of the office, and the signatures of two sponsors must be on the dais by the time the meeting starts. We are hoping that someone will step up to fill the positions of Conduc-tress and Associate Conductress so that we will have a full corps of officers. Next year should be fun filled so help support your chapter by taking an office. Installation will be on November 3rd at the Red-ding Masonic Family Center . We will have a dinner at 6:00 pm and installation will start at 7:30pm. Remember the Deputies Luncheon on October 7th at the Tremont Café on Main Street in Red Bluff. We will be honoring Sister Jean Haynes as our outgo-ing and incoming Deputy Grand Matron. Come out and help us honor this wonderful Sister who gives so much to our Order. RSVP to Janyce Mathis at 528-2999. Happy Birthday to all our October babies and Happy Anniversary to all who married in October.

Dear Sisters & Brothers, WHEEW!!!!!!!! The summer is over and
many thanks to everyone for all of your hard work at the events we did the past two months. Guard duty, 4th of July, Sheriff’s Annual Meeting, and the 29th Car Show-n-Shine. It took many helping hands to complete all of this and we thank you. We still have much to do this year with two more burger and dog events and a few repairs to the Com-munity Building. The McCloud Bike-toberfest and the Apple Harvest Event are coming up and we hope you will come join the fun. Highway 89 cleanup is planned for a Saturday in October. With six volunteers, we can have it com-pleted in less than two hours. We will again assist the Elks Brothers at the Vet-eran’s Day Dinner on Saturday, November 11th at 5:00 PM in the Community Building. No assigned duties yet, but please come and honor our Veterans. There will be door prizes and silent auctions. The 13th Annual Christmas Party will be Saturday December 9th at 5:00 PM, so mark your calendars. Any questions, contact your Secretary (530)938-1886. See you in Lodge!

Western Star #2Shasta, California
Welcome Redding #17Order of the Eastern Star
Redding, California
Greetings from the East; September was a full month of activity for Western Star #2. What had our annual Dinner and a Movie on Saturday 09/16. Dinner and a Movie is always a great event to attend, lots of fun for ev-eryone. We had a third degree practice on Tues-day, 09/19 and Brother Robert Hardberger’s third degree on Tuesday, 09/26 after our Hall Associa-tion meeting. Several of Western Star’s brothers helped to serve at Welcome Redding Chapter East-ern Star’s prime rib dinner on Saturday 09/23. And several Western Star officers will have taken part in Fort Crook’s Past Master’s third degree on 9/30 at 1:00 p.m. Unfortunately we recently learned that Trin-ity #27 is going to close their doors. Western Star passed a resolution to form a committee to investi-gate combining with Trinity #27 at our September stated meeting. This is a three to six month process so we will keep you informed. Our Hall Association is looking into acquiring a defibrillator and training package. None of us are getting any younger and I would hate to think that we could have saved a brother’s life with a little foresight but didn’t bother. We have Grand Lodge coming up in October so there isn’t much on the table for Western Star.
Dave Heberling W.M.
The presentation to Janet Williams for 50 yrs. of membership turned out to be quite in-teresting. Her son, Greg, gave his perspective of 50 years. Sister Janet was pleased with the special ceremony. Our Assoc. Matron was delayed by fires, so she was elected to be the Grand Chapter Dele-gate even though she wasn’t there. Sister April was a bit surprised when she arrived. Next month (Oct.) is election of officers. We need a three (3) year member on the Finance Committee. Nomination cards are to be filled out before the meeting. Also, next month is our Friendship Meeting ---Halloween costumes, Anteroom Meeting, Games, Cards, Social. Pot Luck (Redding Members only, Serving size 10-12): A-H Salads I -S Main dish casseroles T -Z Side dishes Our Prime Rib Dinner on Sept. 23 was very well supported; the food was fantastic and service spectacular. Everybody had a fabulous time. All that are able should attend the Cascade Assoc. Meeting in Red Bluff honoring the DGM’s on Oct.7 - RSVP to Janyce Mathis 528-2999. Glad to see Annette & Ray Vowell (& Heidi) back. It’s been a long time. The ladies at One Safe Place were very pleased to receive the load of groceries. This will continue, so remember for the next meeting. See all of you Oct. 10 in costume??? Carolyn Harrison WM

Dates of notable interest: Birthdays: Steve How-ard, 10/02, Greg Thomas, 10/04, Rollie Newman, 10/06, John Brewster, 10/09, and John Budman, 10/14. Anniversaries: John Brewster, 10/16, Jack McDonald, 10/03, Rollie Newman, 10/27, and Harold Underwood, PM, 10/30. Thank you, Donna Hanover, for preparing a fine lasagna dinner with green beans, caesar salad, and homemade cake with ice cream for the Brethren and their families. It was delicious as usual! During the Stated Meeting, it was brought up that one of our scholarship recipients has not enrolled in school for the fall semester. The scholarship offer was therefore rescinded. Anyone that would like to prepare a meal for the Stated Meeting dinner, please let me know. An informal discussion was held after the Stated Meeting regarding possible consolidation.

Members & friends; On behalf of all the sponsoring bodies of this magazine, I want to thank you all for your donations and sponsor-ship advertisements. We have not reached our goal, but we are close and if a few more business card ads as well as donations come in, we will have the funds to continue the Trestleboard through its 25th year. Quantity of donations are reduced but the average donation is up. This is indicative of your determination to keep the lines of communication open. Our fraternities thrive with communication and it is apparent to me that you all see this as well. Remember, if you know any member who is in business, suggest to them that they place their business card in the magazine. If they have any questions, they may call me and I’ll be happy to answer whatever I can. We welcome one new advertiser this year, Brother Ernest Linton a member of Reading Lodge who has shown his support by placing his card with us. I would remind all readers to try to remember and patronize these advertisers. To those of you who have sent in private donations, your efforts are very much appreciated by the organizations to which you belong.
