Adding means putting groups together. The symbol for addition is called the plus sign (+). The answer to an addition problem is called the sum. Counting objects can make adding easier. It does not matter which number you write f irst. The total is the same.

2 + 5 = 75 + 2 = 7

The picture shows a group of 4 dogs and a group of 3 dogs. The picture also shows 7 dogs in all. Another way to write this is 4 + 3 = 7. This is called an equation. An equation is the same on both sides of the equal sign (=).

Adding doubles is often easier than adding 2 different numbers. Change the numbers to make them doubles or 1 more than a double. Add the double and, if there is a leftover, add 1 more.

I can solve addition word problems within 20.

Draw a picture to solve each problem. Write the addition problem in the box.

1.OA.1

1. Alexis had 4 f ish. Brianna had 2 f ish. How many f ish did the girls have altogether?

2. Shane checked out 2 books. Tad checked out 3 books. How many books did they check out in all?

3. Miguel had 3 crayons. Ross had 4 crayons. How many crayons did they have altogether?

4. Jeff saw 1 rabbit. Soon, 4 more rabbits came. How many rabbits were there altogether?

The nest had 3 eggs. The mother bird laid 1 more egg.How many eggs were there in all?

Sometimes, it helps to draw a picture about a word problem. So, 3 eggs plus 1 egg equals 4 eggs in all.
