Third Assignment – Original TaskThird Assignment – Original Task

You are tasked with designing an “electronic info portal” to be placed at every single bus, metro, and train stop in Los Angeles and Orange County, the aim of which is to assist travelers

Identify as many uses, stakeholders, and goals for these stakeholders as possible

Clearly document these in a typewritten document, to be handed in on Tuesday October 6, at the beginning of class– separate list of stakeholders & goals– separate list of uses, marking which stakeholders would be

inclined to be involved in such use

Third Assignment – Original Task (Continued)Third Assignment – Original Task (Continued)

Assignment is on an individual basis, but will be continued in class on Tuesday

You should identify at least ten stakeholders, with no more than half of them being sub-classes of passenger

You should identify at least three goals for each stakeholder

You should identify at least twenty distinct uses, though you should easily be able to identify many more

The overall focus is on broad brainstorming– your document does not need to have lengthy narratives

Today’s TaskToday’s Task

Discuss and analyze the uses, stakeholders, and goals on your teams’ respective lists (30 min)– focus on overlap and conflict– focus on establishing a shared understanding

Reflection (10 min)

Design at least three different electronic info portals (30 min)– focus on the interactions different users would have with each

info portal you design, but keep in mind all of your stakeholders what does it look like (25%) how do different users accomplish different tasks (75%)

Reflection (10 min)

Reflection – Part 1Reflection – Part 1

How easy or difficult was it to think up this many uses, stakeholders, and goals?

Reflection – Part 1Reflection – Part 1

If pressed, could you think of more?

Reflection – Part 1Reflection – Part 1

Have you taken the bus, metro, or train as of late, and did this inform your process?

Did you go out to a bus, metro, or train stop?

Reflection – Part 1Reflection – Part 1

Did you look up some images on the Internet?

Did you look up any potential competitors’ products?

Reflection – Part 1Reflection – Part 1

Were there uses that others thoughts of that you did not?

Were there stakeholders that others thought of that you did not?

Were there goals that others thought of that you did not?

Were there uses that others thought of differently?

How easy or difficult was it to resolve your differences?

Reflection – Part 1Reflection – Part 1

Are all of your team’s stakeholders’ goals compatible with one another?

Why? Why not?

Today’s Task – Part 2Today’s Task – Part 2

Design at least three different electronic info portals (30 min)– focus on the interactions different users would have with

each info portal you design, but keep in mind all of your stakeholders

what does it look like (25%) how do different users accomplish different tasks (75%)

Reflection (10 min)

Reflection – Part 2Reflection – Part 2

Do your three different designs lead to different outcomes (experiences) with the portals?

Should it?

Should it not?

Reflection – Part 2Reflection – Part 2

How did you arrive at three different solutions?

© 2009 University of California, Irvine – André van der Hoek 18April 18, 2023 – 21:19:16

Reflection – Part 2Reflection – Part 2

What was the influence of the lists of users, stakeholders, and goals in your designs?

Did they help?

Did they hinder?

Reflection – Part 2Reflection – Part 2

In designing your solutions, did you improve your understanding of the problem (other uses, stakeholders, and/or goals)?

Reflection – Part 2Reflection – Part 2

How was this different from other design problems you faced so far?

Reflection – Part 2Reflection – Part 2

Particularly in the bridge exercise, it was useful to play with the Play-Doh, dowels, etc. Were there any materials you used that helped you to work through this design problem?

Third Assignment – Final TaskThird Assignment – Final Task

Deliver a type-written document that provides your final design for the “electronic info portal”– detailed list of uses, stakeholders, and goals– analysis of any conflicting goals and how you resolved hem– final design for what the portal looks like (with motivation for the

choices you made; 25%)– final design for how different users accomplish their different

tasks (with motivation for the choices you made; 75%)

This is a team assignment (with team evaluations)

Deliver by Tuesday October 13, at the beginning of class

(With some luck, Calico results from today remain available)

Third Assignment – Final Task (Continued)Third Assignment – Final Task (Continued)

Prepare a 5 minute “sales pitch” for your design of the electronic info portal

Pretend the audience is the customer who is to decide among your design and those of the other teams

Grade– 50% is based on the document and presentation– 50% based upon your individual work and participation
