About VA

■ Established as an independent agency, July 1930

■ Elevated to Cabinet level, March 1989

■ Second largest Federal Department

– More than 270,000 employees

■ Organizational structure

– Central Office (VACO), Washington, DC

– Veterans Health Administration (VHA)

■ Provides services and benefits through a nationwide network of 153 hospitals, 895 outpatient clinics, 135 nursing homes, 47 residential rehabilitation treatment programs, 209 readjustment counseling centers

– Veterans Benefits Administration (VBA)

■ Operates 57 veterans benefits regional offices

– National Cemetery Administration (NCA)

■ Operates 157 national cemeteries

Strategic and Enabling Goals

■ Goal 1: Restore the capability of veterans with disabilities to the greatest extent possible, and improve the quality of their lives and that of their families.
