How CacheCade Works

• Traditional HDD-only volumes are limited by the hard disk drive mechanicals– Configured for large application data set(s)– Limited performance gains by striping lots of HDDs

• In reality, storage supports varying application workloads– Resulting in hot and cold VD locations– Other logging and paging to very small areas of total VD

• A small amount of SDRAM cache does accelerate IO performance but overall performance is still limited by HDDs.

Result: sub-optimal storage utilization
