VOLUME 22 ISSUE 3 Page 3

Hello all, Flappings is now under new management. Mike Reddick recently left the news-

letter as editor/publisher to concentrate on his excellent web site dedicated to our airfield;

T67.org. Mike did an excellent job on Flappings, and we all appreciate his dedication and

time spent on both the newsletter and the web site. We all thank him for his dedication.

I would like to expand our newsletter with guest contributors on any subject that pro-

motes the majority of interest found on Hicks… in other words, I may not publish an article

on quilting (unless it has airplanes or cars on it) or Pez dispenser collecting (unless..well

you know) This month, one of our neighbors is providing one of many inventive ways to

get the most for your flying dollar. Another subject I would like to see, would be all the

building projects being undertaken, such as dragsters, campers, go-carts, antique car res-

torations, aircraft building projects, who knows how many RV’s are being built as I write

this at Hicks alone? (besides Jay Pratt). Send some pictures of your project to my e-mail

with a story or just a description.

We are fortunate to share one of the most unique privately owned airports in the state,

diverse in our interest, and passionate in our beliefs and politics. Hicks Field is first and

foremost an airport and one we all wish to see continue as such regardless of your hobbies

and sports. The uses we find for the hangars we own are wide ranging, from multi million

dollar businesses, to 2000 square foot toy boxes. The popularity of Hicks as a residence

attracts many as well, including myself. How cool is it to share such a place with like

minded gear heads involved with almost anything that has an engine and goes fast.

Please feel free to call or email anytime with ideas, stories, advertisements, sugges-

tions, and criticism.

Be safe,

Ron Sinclair

Letter from the editor

As the newest editor of Flappings, I will attempt to add to

its content with all the news and stories related to our airport

that we can afford to stuff into its pages. I would also like to

invite anyone to submit airport stories and information regard-

less of whether it’s aviation or non-aviation hobby related. I

would enjoy seeing some variety that includes auto, cycle, fly

tying, whatever! There’s some cool stuff hidden in these han-

gars. This is everyone’s newsletter, let’s open up the field and

become neighbors.

March HAPA Board of Directors Meeting: March 13, 2007 Hangar 155 “Let’s Talk” at 7:00PM BoD Meeting At 8:00PM

Presidents Corner By Coy Surles

While a cold and wet February brought its share of taxiway and septic issues, I am en-

couraged by our members continued commitment to improving our airfield. People like Bill

Akin, Bob Avery, Alan Sanderson and Don Browning are flying on auto pilot when some-

thing needs to be done at Hicks. Whether overseeing septic maintenance, repairing gates,

filling potholes, or resolving tax issues, these folks deserve our sincerest gratitude. When

you see a member engaged in this activity, please stop and say thank you.

Your board is hard at work reviewing CCRs, securing maintenance bids, and tending to

the day by day challenges we face. Unfortunately however, issues such as outside fuel

storage, taxiway damage due to water line installation, blocking your neighbors hangar ac-

cess and others continue to cause undo work and anxiety. We need to continually ask our-

selves if the activity we are engaged in will make our airport safer and more enjoyable.

Simply put, if the answer is ‘no’, then I respectfully ask you communicate your plans to

correct these and other infractions.

This board is dedicated to working with our members in the shared vision of continually

improving our place to fly, live and enjoy our hobbies. We have a lot to look forward to in

the upcoming months with better weather, more flying and the like. One of our members,

Larry Hinson, has suggested a May or June block party involving a car show, live band,

airplane rides and the like. More details to come. Once again, I would like to personally

thank those who continue to serve and I look forward to our future at Hicks.

Tips & tricks By the Former Mayor of Haltom City, Gary Larson

My $14.25 Engine Preheater

I've been doing a little research on Engine Preheaters. Some of the solutions are

very expensive. I found a post where someone had adapted a portable electric heater. I

remembered I had an old heater and a piece of 4" flexible metal duct left over from in-

stalling a new dryer that would work if I could connect them together. I stopped by the

Aviation Department at Home Depot to see what I could find. The heater is 7 1/2"

round. I found an 8" to 6" reducer and a 6" to 4" reducer to get close to the correct

size. A little sheet metal work and some pop-rivets and here's the finished product.

Here's the setup in the hangar. I place

a shipping pad/blanket over the cowl-

ing to hold the heat in. The heater is

controlled by a 7 day timer, so I can

stop by the hangar on the way home

from work and set it to come on a cou-

ple of hours before I plan to fly. I plan

to add a Thermo Cube that would only

allow the heater to come on if it is cold

enough to make preheating necessary.

Editors Note: I teased Gary a bit about this set-up in our “Arctic Conditions” of

Texas, But I must admit… One day when Gary wasn’t around, I borrowed the pre-

heater above and used it to warm the engine in my Cessna 150. It worked great, I

was up to operating temps about the time I reached the run-up area. Of course it

should be noted that this article is strictly for academic purposes and not intended for

actual application.

VOLUME 22 ISSUE 3 Page 9

A regular meeting of the Hicks Airfield Pilots Association Board of Directors, held in Hangar

155, 13 February 2007, the president in the chair, and Mr. Browning acting as secretary,

was called to order at 7:30 pm after 30 minutes of open discussion.

Board members present were Mr. Coy Surles (President), Mr. Ron Sinclair (Vice President),

Mr. John Unangst, Mr. Jim Usher (Treasurer) and Mr. Don Browning. Mrs. Melana Sinclair

(Assistant Secretary) was present. Board members not present were Mr. Bill Akin and Mr.

Bob Kraft. Principal Management Group agent Ms. Carol Moran was present at the invita-

tion of the Board. Nine members of the Association were also present as observers.

Mr. Usher distributed copies of the most recent financial statement.

Mr. Surles made a motion to defer deciding about the south gate project until a cost esti-

mate from Mr. Akin could be evaluated. The motion was passed.

Mr. Surles made a motion to proceed with taxiway repair. Mr. Akin will be asked to inves-

tigate the available options such as whether member volunteers or the runway contractor

will make the repairs. Mr. Usher offered to ask his contacts about the best way to proceed

to solve this problem. The motion passed.

Mr. Browning made a motion to restate and amend the CCRs. Mr. Unangst reminded the

Board that he was anxious to receive written input regarding ways to improve the existing

document. The plan is to consider all of the suggestions, and then a committee will go

through every line of the CCRs applying the recommendations, experience and common

sense in an attempt to produce a viable document. The membership will be asked to com-

ment on the drafts at various stages. When a consensus is achieved the attorney will be

asked to review the draft document and any required changes will be made. Then it goes

to a membership vote which requires 60% in favor to become ratified. The motion passed.

Mr. Browning made a motion that the north gate batteries be replaced. Mr. Usher offered

to assist in obtaining the required three bids. The motion passed.

Mr. Browning made a motion that the Association pay the expenses of one member to at-

tend the 2007 TxDOT Aviation Conference in Corpus Christi on 18 April. This would include

the $125 registration fee and two days at the conference hotel ($120 per day). Mr.

Unangst amended the motion to designate Mr. Browning as the attendee. The motion

passed.

The meeting was adjourned at 8:15 pm.

Respectfully submitted by:

Don Browning

HAPA Secretary
