#OCSA2018
Dear friends,
I am truly pleased to welcome you to the 2018 OCSA Conference,
CommunityConnect. As our new name implies, this year’s conference
is an exceptional opportunity to connect with home care, independent
living and community support service trailblazers – and network with
thought leaders across various sectors and industries.
Last year we celebrated OCSA’s 25th anniversary and strong record of
advocating for the home and community sector with one voice. We know
that we are strongest when we come together and collaborate on innovative
sector solutions that enrich the lives of clients across the province.
This year’s conference finds us meeting during a time of intense change, but we are ready to meet
the challenge head on. Not-for-profit home and community care providers play a crucial role in helping to
end hallway medicine. We know that clients prefer to live in their communities and our sector makes that
happen for people with ever-increasing, complex needs.
OCSA decided to rebrand the conference with the consistent CommunityConnect name going forward,
because it gives sector stakeholders the opportunity to reconnect in one place, as well as learn from one
another. The conference is also a great place to forget connections with others in the broader health care
system including our colleagues at the Ministry of Health, LHINs and academic. Over the next few days,
delegates will find knowledge, tools and solutions that they can take back to their organizations
and put to good use in their own communities, for the clients and caregivers they serve.
Our 2018 program is filled with diverse content, including keynotes by CBC radio host, bestselling author and
medical watchdog Dr. Brian Goldman, a panel discussion on the future of digital health in the community
featuring Will Falk, family physician and expert on social determinants of health Dr. Gary Bloch, and
government relations expert Chris Loreto who will provide insights on navigating the new government.
We also have a full program of interactive workshops, a fantastic tradeshow and, of course, we’ll take
some time to relax and have fun at our pub style trivia night.
On behalf of the staff and board at OCSA, thank you for joining us, and for your outstanding contributions
to home and community care.
Warm regards,
Deborah Simon

Opening Keynote
The Power of Kindness:Why Empathy Is Essential in Everyday LifeDr. Brian Goldman
Dr. Goldman is host of CBC’s award-winning radioshow “White Coat,
Black Art,” where he takes listeners behind the scenes of hospitals
and doctor’s offices.
He is also the bestselling author of The Night Shift, The Secret
Language of Doctors and The Power of Kindness. Powerful and
engaging, this presentation explores why kindness is so vital to our
existence. You’ll be captivated by his stories from around the planet showing the secrets to success used
by some of the most empathetic people alive and discover:
• what motivates a group of bystanders to help a person who falls in the street
• why a firefighter runs toward, instead of away from, a burning building
• how robots are being developed to help dementia sufferers
• what a ground zero bartender can teach you about kindness.
Afternoon Plenary
For The People: Navigation Opportunity with Ontario’s New GovernmentChris Loreto
The election of Doug Ford as premier represents an opportunity for
the community and not for profit sector to strengthen its role in the
delivery of programs that achieve lasting outcomes for everyday

build an understanding of the Ford government’s philosophy and how
the sector can use this understanding to align interests in a way that
creates a “win-win” for everyday Ontarians.
Chris Loreto is a Principal at StrategyCorp specializing in helping public, private and not for profit clients
create conditions for success with advice on public policy development, strategic and business planning,
organizational and operational design, and stakeholder communications and engagement. Chris has more

Morning Keynote
Pushing Upstream: Social Interventionsand Innovative Approaches in Health EquityDr. Gary Bloch
We have long known that the social determinants of health, the
conditions in which we live, work, and play, have a bigger impact on
our health than just about any other factor. As home and community
support providers, however, we are sometimes tempted to deny our
role in addressing these determinants of health, simply because we
feel ill equipped to address them with the individuals we serve.
Dr. Gary Bloch has spent his career developing approaches for front line service providers to address
clients’ social health. He has created and implemented individual and team-based interventions into
social threats to health, in an attempt to make addressing social health a normal part of front line care.
He believes health providers can use their front line expertise to shape healthy social policy and has
gained national and international attention for his innovative work.
Closing Plenary
Panel Discussion: The Future of Digital Health in the CommunityWill Falk – Moderator
Technology advancements such as cloud computing, mobility and
APIs make collaboration, coordination and integration all possible, but
it’s the people that make it happen.
Will Falk, healthcare strategist and public policy guru, will moderate
this panel discussion where tech stakeholders share their perspectives
around digital health, and their insights around the challenges and
opportunities of moving the sector forward in the future. William has spent more than 25 years as a strategist
and management consultant in New York and Toronto, advising top academic centres, governments, and
innovative companies in healthcare.
Panelists include Adrian Schauer also from AlayaCare, Munro Ross from Community Shared Services
Operations at the Champlain LHIN and Lori Holloway from Bellwoods Centres for Community Living.
