    IntroductionIn order to protect services (cables, pipes, ducting & drains), and those engaged in carrying out work on or adjacent to these

    services, BAA have specified a requirement for all project and maintenance teams to

    mark all untraceable services with 3M EMS RFID markers at 6m intervals, T junctions

    and changes of direction.

    Marker Types• 3M RFID Ball Marker

    – Read range up to 1.2m.(except power marker which is 1.0m)

    – Writeable at ranges up to 0.3m.– Size: 104mm diameter sphere.– Weight 350g.– Shell: high-density polyethylene.– Liquid content: 20-30% propylene glycol, 70-80%

    Ball Marker Burial Instructions

    1. Either: Programme marker before complete burial, or restrict marker depth to 300mm. When programming markers, DO NOT “LOCK DATA”. Only BAA personnel may do this.

    2. Decide whether or not to tie markers to the asset being marked.3. Ensure the nearest marker of the same colour is farther away (horizontally) than depth of both

    markers.4. Remove ID number tag (barcode) from marker and attach to relevant documentation if desired.5. If desired, tie marker to asset using cable tie or other method through one or both tie-down tabs.6. If the asset being marked is metallic, ball marker should be separated by at least 10cm of firm

    sand or soil.7. After the marker has been placed, it should be covered with at least 15cm of firmly packed sand

    or soil. Do not use stones or any sharp objects.8. Backfill the hole, subject to the maximum depth specified in the diagram.

    Full Range Marker Burial Instructions

    1. Either: Programme the marker before complete burial or restrict marker depth of cover to 400mm. When programming markers, DO NOT “LOCK DATA”. Only BAA personnel may do this.

    2. Ensure that nearest marker of the same colour is farther away (horizontally) than depth of both markers.

    3. Remove ID number tag (barcode) from marker and attach to relevant documentation if desired.

    4. If the asset being marked is metallic, full range marker should at least 15cm away from or above it.

    5. After the marker has been placed, ensure it is completely flat, such that during backfill there will be no greater than 2m depth of cover.

    6. Cover the marker with at least 10cm of firmly packed sand or soil.7. Backfill the hole.

    Download Software – PC Tools• Enables preparation of data templates for writing to RFID

    Download the executable file and run it. Follow the instructions on the screen. The default location for the software is: C:\Program Files\3M\Dynatel Locator PC Tools. New installs automatically remove old versions of PC Tools

    PC Tools Main ScreenLocators are shipped with both a serial cable and USB adapter with the required drivers. Use the desired method to connect locator and PC. Close any programs that may be using the COM ports. Select the country in which the unit will be operating. Warning: It is unlawful to operate this unit when configured for any other country than the one in which it is used. The default comport connection is COM1. USB connection may be through another COM port. Ensure the locator is switched on.

    Upgrading Locator Software• Each time a new version of PC tools is

    downloaded, the corresponding software on your locators should be upgraded also. Click the “Upgrade Software” button from the main screen. Select the right COM port and baud rate 38400. Then click “Download”. The download will take a few minutes; do not disconnect locator during this time.

    • If you are unable to connect to the locator, try the following:

    1. Ensure the correct COM port is selected on the PC

    2. Press the menu key on the locator, then COM setup and check the PC option is selected.

    • Every time the software is upgraded, the initial configuration must be run again. Check the right country is selected in the main screen and click “Initial Configuration”, then click the “Download” button.

    Alternate BAA Language• A BAA specific display language is

    available to account for the utility groupings shown above. Click the “Language Configuration” button in the main screen, select “BAAEng”from the dropdown menu and click “Download”.

    • Other configuration options are available: click “Configure Receiver” on the main screen. Select the locator you want to configure (typically this would be 1420E-iD) Select the units and date format you prefer. Clicking on the “Marker types” tab will show the Utility menu shown. Ensure all seven of the frequencies are checked. Save the configuration and click “Send config”.

    Changing Settings for Language & Time and Date

    • First, to access the locator setup, press the “Menu” key on the locator, then “More”, then “Setup”.

    • Here you should change the “Eng Lang” to the “BAAEng” BAA locator language and benefit from the utility groupings shown earlier.

    • The correct time and date cannot be set from PC Tools; press the “Clock” key in the setup menu.

    • Use the arrow keys to cycle between days, months, years, hours and minutes. Use plus and minus keys to change the values shown.

    • If you attempt to cycle around off the edge of the screen, you can change the date format between DD/MM/YY and MM/DD/YY

    • When the correct date and time have been set, press the “Locate/OK” key to confirm.

    BAA Marker Data Format• From the main screen, select GPS/iD

    Marker Utility. Click the “iD Marker Template” button.

    • You will see a table which shows data that can be written to a marker. The data fields that have been specified by BAA are:

    1. Utility from the groupings2. Depth relative to OS datum3. Size e.g. diameter4. Material of marked asset5. Descrptn of marked asset

    • All the labels can be picked from the dropdown menu. Most of the descriptions for fields 1, 4 and 5 should be available from dropdown menus

    • If not, free text can be entered; this must be used for Depth & Size.

    • At all times, the remaining data capacity is shown just below the data table.

    Downloading Templates to Locator• Save as many templates as

    you wish. Click the “Download Template(s)” button.

    • You should be able to see a list of all the templates that are currently stored in your locator.

    • You can remove templates from this list or add other templates from your PC on the left hand side by clicking the double arrow button in the middle.

    • When you have all the templates you need (you can store up to 32) click “Download selected files to Locator”

    Favourites User ListsNot mandatory but improves productivity

    • You can restrict the options available on the “labels”dropdown menu. For each selected label, you can restrict the corresponding “descriptions” dropdown menu, as show for “Materials”

    • This is especially useful on-site where scrolling through a long list with a locator can be time consuming.

    • Save your favourite user list and click “Send to Receiver” to download it (only one may be held on a locator at a time)

    Writing Data• On your locator, press the Menu key, then Write

    Mode.• Select the template you want to write, then press

    “View/Edit”• You can scroll down to check all the template’s

    data. Press Write Marker when satisfied.• Press the marker key to cycle through the different

    marker types. When you have selected the right one, press the Start Write key.

    • You will be asked if you want to lock the data. If you press Yes, you will not be able to change the data later. If the marker already contains data, you will be prompted to overwrite the existing data.

    • Warning: you should be aware of the marker’s write range. In most cases, you cannot write to a ma

    Modifying Templates On-site• In write mode, you can also modify existing

    templates.• You can also select the Last Written/Read

    template.• Use the arrow keys to select the description you

    want tochange and press Modify• If a user list is loaded into the locator and includes

    the selected label, it is used automatically. Otherwise, you can select “UserEdit” to enter free text.

    • When you’ve finished modifying a template, you can write it to a marker in the usual way.

    • If you wish to change labels as well as descriptions, you need to select Menu, then Data/Template

    Audit Trail• From the GPS/iD

    Marker Utility menu, click on the “XferRead/Written Mkr data”tab, then click the “Get Programmed Marker Data From Receiver”button.

    • Click the “Copy Marker Data to File” button. You can create a new file or append to an existing file. You can add comments to individual markers.

    • Click the “Export” button to convert the file to .csv, a format which can be read by a spreadsheet application.
